I started another thread because---
I found out hubby has a sandblaster... he said he could sandblast the whole cage himself.
Bill/Don??? Could I go ahead and do that and then wash it down with the baking soda paste, rinse w/vinegar & water and paint them pink, purple and green to match the aviary? I will wait to buy paint until I hear from Bill about where/what to get.... Heck, it's like a great craft project! Hehehehe....
Is there something to seal the paint or no? Since this is the case, and if I can do the above- we'll sandblast and paint the HQ too...I'll have some cages to help in times of need...anyway, awaiting your advice.

Hey Wanda.
If you paint the cages yourself you run a serious risk of the paint not holding up. Read Don's post.
Call around to some local companies that do powder coating. That is your best bet. They will do the sandblasting and also the powder coating.
Powder coating is the "process" that paint is applied. The metal object - in this case a cage - is first sandblasted then sometimes acid dipped and then rinsed. Then a wire is attached to the cage and it supplies a negative electric charge. The paint is not liquid but powder. The powder paint is given a positive charge. When sprayed onto the cage - the paint is attracted to the cage and there is no waste of paint. Then the cage is put into an oven and baked.
This process makes for a hard and durable painted surface. It is something that you cannot do on your own.
Almost all commercial painting is done by the powder coating process. It makes for a better finish and there is very little paint wasted.
I have called several small companies in my area that do powder coating. I asked them about the lead and zinc content in their paint. Every one of them responded - We do not use lead in our paint --- never have.
Go to whitepages.com and do a search for powder coating in your area. Give them a call and ask for an approximate price. The ones in my area would sandblast and paint my China made cage (40X80X76) for $350. So it could be possible that you could get both of your cages done for not much more than that.
Let us know what you decide.
I am getting a 48x36 domed cage redone for $200 - shop around.

Wanda Allied is on your side of town & will give you a phone quote. I know there are more powder coating places in town.

You bet. I did a search on the net and didn't come up with much else besides this company. I just did powder coating houston. I am going to try again tomorrow with some different searches though. I will ask about multi-unit discounts while I am at it. Maybe if we do them all together, they'll cut us some slack.

That would be great. I would throw in another one then.

Yep - you heard right - that is the A&E China made cage. I absolutely loved it. Being a flat top - it was easy to hang toys. Her living quarters - eating and the such - including pooping was on the right and her play area was on the left. A divider could be put in the center - but I of course left the divider out. Baby used every inch of that cage. It was like a play gym for her in a protected area.
Unfortunately it is lead toxic. I have to keep that cage intact for the class action suit, otherwise I would have had it redone severeal months ago. It is now disassembled and stored in my shed.
The only other bad thing about it is the latches - easy to undo for most Toos - but so far, Baby is not an escape artist.

I hate to burst your bubble, Uncle, but when I got home from work this afternoon, I found my laptop on, opened to my address book. It seems someone has edited your contact info by changing your name to Baby. I checked and Anna's is listed as Benny, Dots has been changed to Fergie. It seems someone who likes Safflower seeds and Hot Chili flavored Too treats, not to mention has an obsession of removing letters off the keyboard, has been doing some online cavorting with other AFID team members. As you know, Cloud is a specialist in incarceration chamber escapes. I fear Baby now knows more than she is letting on.

Ahhhaaa - that's how my Windows desktop gets rearranged.
I think I will put in a hidden video spy camera to catch that un-named someone in the act.
Shhhhh....

Larry -
How on earth did you move it around?
Are they still available? Is there a photo somewhere on the Internet?
(I do realize that even a new one would have to be sandblasted and powder-coated.)
A friend recently gave me a King L-shaped triple macaw cage. It is quite old, but in great shape--no paint chipping, but I'm going to have it tested before I use it. Each disassembled part is so heavy I can't pick it up, so wherever I put it, it will have to stay there. It does have wheels, but I imagine it will take a lot of effort to even push it a few inches.

Evelyn,
You will be surprised how easy a large cage is to move around. Casters are usually quite large on these types of cages and they move easily.
The lead and zinc in cage paint really hits a nerve with me. So I am bitting my lip as I say this...
No one should ever put money into the pockets of these scum-bags by buying one of their cages and having it repainted.
I will not say any more.

I understand your concern. I was smitten with the fact that it is so big, but then I realized my King's cage (the gift) is 96" long.
So no China-made cages for me.
