Hi,

Posted on another forum and there is no reason to doubt the story. To put it simply a conure tried to bathe in one of these water bowls and drowned. I have one of these bowls for food for a tiel so I can easily see how this can be dangerous. I wouldn't use it for water so it never crossed my mind.

Use extreme caution if you are using any covered bowl as a water dish. This link takes you to a picture of the type of bowl.

Thank You for the direct pic. I guess I was thinking about copyright issues by using the link:-)

No copyright issue at all. Thanks for thinking of it.

I think Drs Smith and Fosters should be contacted and be told what happened with a product that they sell. I understand they are good folks and would want to know that a product of theirs is beyond hazardous.

The problem here is --- no one thought the product through as to its safety... from the designer, to the importer, to the distributer, to the online retailer, to the end consumer.

No one in that entire supply chain took that product in their hands and studied it for one minute for potential danger. Now that we know a bird DROWNED in one - then we can clearly see that this product SHOULD NOT BE ON THE MARKET.

I can contact them...I've worked with their vets before on making changes with respect to unsafe products.

That is great. I have heard many good things about those two.

Please keep us posted.

I suggested to the owner of the conure to contact them as well. Hopefully they will listen. It makes me so sad to think of that poor bird :(

The vets they use as consultants make the decisions and recommendations with respect to what is sold. In actuality, I dont think Foster and Smith really get into that angle of it. In any case, I'm already on the case. I contacted the Vet I worked with before on matters like this.

I don't want her to get a bunch of emails at this point. We worked well together on a one to one basis. Its also important to note that those bowls are sold all over the place not just F&S so we have to get the word out.

One last note, I use a bowl like that for one of my tiels pellets so the little fragments dont end up all over the place. It is fair to say that if used appropriately for food and not water and used with the appropriate sized bird that is can be safe as a food bowl. I wouldnt use it as a water bowl but I am sure many folks do.
