Rico, the magellan conure, was a petsmart bird of all things and his previous owner bought him for her daughter who finnished hand feeding. Rico is the biggest flirt their ever was. He runs around on top of his cage playing "catch me if you can" while wolf whistling and declaring, "pretty bird!" Just like Peggy Sue if you put a cheek next to his he gives you a big wet one! and then stands up real tall and poofs out his chest to show that he's "da man!" He gets super excited when you go to step him up saying "Step up! Step up! Step Up!" and he loves shoulder rides. I wish he was sticking around for a while but with a personality like that i'm sure someone is bound to fall hard and fast for him.

Goofy the U2 is settling in well and is actually much less aggressive overall than she was when she arrived. She is an odd bird in that she holds her mouth open in a "ready to strike" position all the time but never delivers. When I pointed this out to her previous owners as a sign that she was threatened, they told me that she is always that way and always has been but rarely bites. She has a pretty rough history as she once belonged to a drug lord who did not take care of her and smoked a lot of pot around her. As I understand it, the police raided his house one night and before entering, they threw a "flash-bang" into the house and it landed right by her cage. For those of you who don't know what a flash-bang is, it is exactly what it sounds like, a small granade that emmits a huge bang and bright flash of light. The BANG shattered the sliding glass door that goofy's cage was sitting next to and I imagine all of this was rather tramatic for him. Her most recent owners heard about the raid and drove over to "rescue" the bird and her old owner never came looking for her so they kept her for quite a few years.

Goofy has the most beautiful brown eyes I have ever seen a cockatoo wear. They are so light that they are almost redish. She is getting better about stepping up without being pried off of things and even though her body language is telling me that she is threatened, she seems to enjoy a nice head rub. We have been misting her daily and her ratty feathers are evening out a little bit.

Sydney is settling in but is still the most mellow macaw we have ever met. I expected her to get a bit fiesty by now but perhaps she is still not feeling well. He feathers are starting to soften up a bit which tells me she is getting more fatty acids with what she is eating. Sydney belonged to a breeder before she went to her last owner and the man had decided to breed her. I guess sydney did not do well being partnered with another bird and after several years of trying with no luck, he sold her to be a pet. Being one of the less hormonal birds I have seen, I can see where she might not have been too interested in breeding. She doesn't take well to fast movements but with a lot of buttering up she'll give her heart away. She is really into shredder toys (thanks dot) and likes to supervise the other birds. What a sweet softy.

It feels like we know them you describe their little quirks so well. Tickles & love to them all. So wonderful that you are their for them. On the news last night there was a story out of Arizona about an elderly couple with 800 dogs & 80 parrots that were confiscated out in the desert. Very sad about the conditions & very sad for the couple as well. It must be difficult to face something like that near the end of their lives. We can hope the birds & dogs will find their ways into good homes.

That little Rico can just come on over and live with Auntie Peggy. There would be lots of other friends that Rico could boss around. There are even other conures here that could teach Rico more words to say!

Rico sounds like such a cutie patootie!

Sydney sounds like the sweetest bird :hart: I think she will fit into my flock really well. I can't wait until I get to meet her & hope that soon after I'll get a snuggle.

Anna, Have I mentioned that Theo was bought at Petsmart? Isn't that weird? They used to sell toos at Petsmart! Of course, this was 22 years ago.

REALLY??? I've never seen anything larger than a teil in any of the Petsmarts I've ever been to. Wow. I can't imagine how freaked out I would be If I saw a U2 at Petsmart.

I bought Stella at a petsmart. I walked in and fell in love with her & HAD to have her. They have since quit selling large ones there.

There was a law that was passed (in several states) that do not allow petsmart's/petco's to sell any large birds. Duch our CAG was purchased at a Petsmart, believe it or not!

Well it's good they can't sell the larger ones there anymore. I went into my Petsmart with Chicken and no one on staff even knew he was a cockatoo let alone an M2. So if they don't even know what they are... how can they care for them?

Petsmart by me sold ekkies and greys. That is where I got Sam from. A CAG who has never feather plucked, is not neurotic and was first here (this time around) so has seen all the new ones come and fosters go. He rolls with the puches.

A few of the Petco's did sell amazons, toos, macaw and greys.
