View Full Version : Issue with my cockatiel...long

Keep in mind that I am scheduling a vet visit for Friday in case there are no improvements, but I wanted to know everyone's opinion here. I know there are several experienced people, and wanted some possible insights on what this might be...
Whole story:
I bought Buddy at a local pet store, and the owner was telling me about birds. She mentioned that they were no where near as fragile as you would think because just the other day, one of the dogs chased one of the cockatiels, and got it in his mouth.
I didn't think much of it, and took the little guy home and started spoiling him right away along with the other cockatiel I had at the time.
After his quarantine period, I checked to see how they would get along, then placed them in a cage together. I noticed that it didn't take long for Buddy to start kind of being depressed...so I paid more attention, and realized that he had lost weight. I didn't have scales at the time, but could feel the keel bone sharply through his chest. I immediately put him in another cage and watched droppings and eating habits. I made him an appointment to a vet when I saw that his droppings looked green and almost fluffy...for lack of a better word.
I called the owner of the pet store, because she had asked me to call her if there were ever any questions or issues. She told me to bring Buddy to her, because she could do anything a vet could do, but wouldn't cost me a dime...not to mention, she said that she guaranteed her birds and would do what needed to be done, and that I shouldn't have to pay.
I took her at her word and placed Buddy under her care. I would call daily and visit to see how he was, and she would assure me that he was fine, and had been eating up a storm.
A week went by, with daily phone calls and visits, and on a Thursday, I went to check on him and he was sitting on a perch just fluffled up and shaking. His droppings literally looked like green marshmellows. Alarmed, I called a vet immediately and took him in. The vet's office told me when I called that they did indeed see birds, and the avian vet was in, to just bring Buddy in.
I have to say that at this point, I didn't think he was going to make it. The vet took a stool sample, and claimed that it was helicobacter (same bacteria that gives you ulcers) and prescribed, in one bottle, three antibiotics.
I started giving Buddy the antibiotics and noticed that when I would come home, his feathers would be plastered to his face, and I put it off as being just the meds (you can see all the mistakes I made as a new bird owner can't you?). I soon realized that he was throwing up after the medication was administered. I called the vet and he told me to just give him less at a time, but more often, and he should be fine.
So I did.
His last dose on the 9th day, almost killed him. He started having seizures and throwing up...I cried and cuddled, and stayed up with him all night. He improved quickly after I stopped the meds, and gained a couple of grams, but never reached the 90 he should have been...he stayed between 82 and 85 grams.
He has been normal with normal droppings, and no weight loss for months.
I recently purchased a new cage, and started housing Buddy and Charlie together again.
Lately, I've noticed that Buddy isn't as active as he was...and tends to eat in spurts. He will chow down as if he's starving, then stop quickly, and get really still...as if his tummy is upset (it's the way he would act after taking the meds)
He's not throwing up.
He's not losing weight.
His droppings are the same as always (smaller than Charlies, but normal)
could this simply be a yeast issue?
Or perhaps he's not a happy roommate?
anybody have suggestions? I'm at a loss...

Was this an avian certified or Zoo certified Veterinarian? Can you tell us what meds were given & how long ago? Can you tell us exactly what you are offering as food please. there are several things it could be and having more information would be helpful. Just as a precaution I would try separating them but leave him in proximity to the current cage as any exposure would have already taken place if it is contagious. That way it will be easier to monitor how much he is eating. I'm sure you will get more advice but this is a starting place. hang in there.

Sometimes when we don't know what's wrong with a bird but feel that there is a problem, the best thing we can do is start changing one little thing at a time. I think a vet visit is likely in order, so it's good that he will be going. In the meantime I think you should move him to another cage and see if any of the symptoms improve. That will rule out any possibilities that your other cockatiel is having an effect on Buddy and if the bird acts the same by himself, he may be able to be returned to stay with his roommate at a later time. Sometimes cockatiels with yeast problems will have a certain smell totheir breath. It's hard to discribe, but your vet will be able to tell you if Buddy is ok on Friday. Until then, I would just continue to watch his eating and droppings. If he has digestive issues, feeding him a little bit of unsweetened yogurt might help rebalance his system some. It doesn't sound to me like Buddy is showing any life threatening or serious symptoms, but the truth is that you know your bird better than anyone else and if you feel concerned, you are very justified by having him seen by a vet. If your vet doesn't seem to think there are any issues, you might want to get a second opinion just to stay on the safe side of things.

yes I agree with anna...and I also think that you need to switch from that original vet to a different one...and try the yogurt..unsweetned..i heard that is pretty good for them..please keep us posted dear..hugs

Buddy gained a gram since I wrote this...and seems now to be fine. I had used ACV in his water that day, and think that it may have just upset his tummy.
No more ACV for him! =)

I can't remember the antibiotics...to tell you the truth. I know that one was a mix of two different kinds, then he added a third to that. If I heard or saw them, I would remember.
He's only eating seed...I've been trying to get him to eat real food since I brought him home, but he's not interested, and to be honest, I don't force the issue because he can't really stand to lose weight.
He did gain a gram, and I'm going to weigh him again when I get home to see if things are still improving. thank you! =)

Buddy ate TWO bowls of food yesterday...I guess he's fine, and he may have just been adjusting, or having some other crisis that I could only guess at! he IS the most sensitive and sweet out of all of them...he's the only one that I know without a doubt that I could hand over to a child and KNOW that he would never hurt them...no matter what they did. Not that I would put him in that position, that's just his personality.
Thank you again for all the support! =)

Yea-so happy when things work themselves out. One of our Tiels Sushi would live in the food bowl-she truly lives to eat. Her buddy Loki only eats when he has to & our original Tiel Pieces seems to be the only normal one. We were given Sushi & Loki about a month ago so they are still adjusting to the cage & household, they are both older birds. Loki has to be about 12-14 years & Sushi is about 7 years old.

Can I also just say that I have one cockatiel that's at a steady 84 grams.. with his crop full he weighs in at like 86 but first thing in the morning is always the same. Because my sweet Tiki nearly died I'm EXTREMELY paranoid even when my Fids just nap or I feel they're not eating properly. And I call Anna immediately! and usually she says "Michelle.. It's ok. Nothing is going to happen to the birdies but if you are worried go see the vet" and then I'll wait a few hours and everyone will be acting normally.. and I go "whew" that was close. The point is, Just like people, some birds are bigger than others. Tiki is like a football player, chunky and large, Mickey is more like.. mmm Scarlett Johansson.. Petite and small boned, Mickey will never weigh what Tiki weighs, and Tiki should never again weigh what Mickey weighs :)

michelle,
I know what you mean...something about them getting sick and almost passing really makes you freak out when something's amiss. And I think that's exactly what I was doing...looking for issues when there weren't any.
Buddy is very thin though...and has been since he got so sick...he really can't afford to lose anymore, and I haven't been able to get him to gain. He should be at 90 grams, he's a pretty stocky guy, with broad "shoulders".
I think that I really need to get him on a better diet, eating better foods, and he'll do a complete turn around. i just wouldn't want to see anything happen to him before i could accomplish that.
Thank you! I really needed to hear that someone else had a panic button like I do! =) I guess we just really love these guys a TON.

YEah we do, and also remember, somebirdys are just always gonna be thin. I had a dog growing up that ate and ate and ate but no matter what, he always looked like he was half starved with his ribs sticking out, we even had animal control come in and "check up" on things because a new neighbor thought we were malnourishing poor Chewy. We weren't, he just NEVER gained weight. he probably 'should have' been like 90-100 pounds, he was like, 60-80

Update on Buddy:
He's actually gained another gram!
I have found that in order for him to get his share of food...I have to refill his "special cup" a couple of times a day. He will only eat out of the one cup, while Charlie will eat out of all of them.
Sooooo....if Charlie happens to hit his cup...poor little Buddy won't eat anywhere else.
I fill the cup in the morning before I go to work, then again when I get home, then once more before bed time.
It's working wonders!
Thanks for all of the replies and help! =)
