Hey Everyone.
If you all could place Katie in your prayers...
I took her back to the bedroom about 10 minutes ago to change a dirty diaper she had just made and there was blood mixed with her stool. I'm trying to stay calm and getting the kids packed up and taking Katie to pediatric urgent care, but I feel sick to my stomach. Could the antibiotics she was on have caused this? She has been a bit more fussy lately but I assumed she was teething as she has been trying to eat everything that goes near her face and drooling a lot. Please, please pray for her and I'll let you all know what's going on when we get home. I have absolutely had it with health issues.

I'm thinking about you and asked for a special favor from the big guy to look after Katie and you all.
Done. I already prayed for her while I was at church today. I'll keep them coming. Do let us hear when you can.

Prayers on their way to you. Yes, antibiotics can do it by killing off normal bowel flora and irritating the bowel. It can be treated. Do you bottle or breast feed. Only asking because of the meds you are on. This is the hard part of being a parent. Deep breath, hug to Katie and you will make it through this as well. :hugs::love::angwing:

Thank you everyone for your prayers. We arrived back home about a half hour ago after a long wait, sitting in a crowded waiting room. The Dr who saw Katie said that it seems like one of two things is happening. Her colon is either unbalanced and over run with bacteria from going through two rounds of antibiotics or Katie has an allergy to milk protien and is finally starting to present with bloody stool. She didn't say how one might cure the first one, though I stopped at the store on the way home and picked up a powdered probiotic. If she has a milk allergy i'll have to lay off dairy until she is done nursing which should stop the stool issues. I looked at some rice milk while I was at the store (as i'm horribly allergic to soy milk) and discoved it has a very large added amount of vitamin K which is something I can't have while on blood thinners. It could get interesting trying to negotiate my morning bowl of cereal. We were ordered to call katie's Dr first thing in the morning to set up an appointment tomorrow or friday in which a stool sample will be collected and tested to see how high the levels of bacteria are so I guess we'll know more later.
Whatever the case may be, it sounds like Katie will be fine. I tell you though, nothing scares a parent more than thinking something might be really wrong with their kid. I can say though that I came to a profound understanding of the love I have for her while driving in the car this afternoon. I prayed, "God if you want her, you take her because You can care for her in ways I could never dream and I want the very best for her." Trusting that things would work out for her no matter what was a big step for me.

The bacteria the Dr is referring to is clostridium difficele. When taking an antibiotic the normal bowel flora can be killed off also and other bacteria emerges. Diflucan is the usual treatment if it does not clear on its own. She is already on medicine so the wise Dr wants to test first before adding anything else. Is there diarrhea? Sometimes a bit of yogurt with live bacteria can help. Before changing all of the diet around do one thing at a time or it will become so confusing as what might be the culprit. Some have gone to goats milk which some find non allergenic. Cows mild has hormones with all the stuff they feed cows. Soy milk has plant estrogen and has been implicated in a number of things and in fact soy is not probably one of the better things for birds.
As long as she eats and drinks you are on the safe side. Should she not take fluids and goes more than 12-24 hours without any substantial amount it is time to go back to the dr as she would become dehydrated. Some give jello water (old time thing we did for kids on the peds unit for kids not drinking). They enjoyed it and it got fluid in them. You were right in taking her to the Dr. Yep it can always be something. But you will become seasoned once you live through a few of the childhood stuff.
Now off to bed and get some rest. :pat::hugs:

All of these things just seem so dramatic to a mother of only a few years! I'm sure you who are pros are probably laughing because you know it will all be ok. ;) Katie has had loose stools for several months which started before the antibiotics ever did. I told her Dr. about it but he did not seem concerned. The Dr. today told me that could be because of a milk allergy. I have been buying goats milks occasionally as a treat and like it. I may try that before giving up milk - but for now the Dr. advised me not to change my diet until instructed. The things soy does to me are unholy, LOL, so we will not even go there. We'll wait and see what her stool sample comes back with. she had another dirty diaper tonight and it wasn't as bad as the one this afternoon. Thanks for the advice!...I always forget that you worked in the medical field.

There is also Almond milk but who knows what they put in that. I was raised on goats milk as bovine milk didn't & still doesn't work for me. Goats milk fudge is yummy! Hope all is easily fixed!
