Sydney is a 16 year old green wing macaw that came to stay with us today. We have not had much time to get to know her yet but she seems like a very soft hearted girl - a little on the shy side maybe. She steps up - some of the time but really seems to want to hear that she is ok and loved. Her previous owners believe that she is a woman's bird. By the looks of it, she really went to town on herself a few weeks ago and tore a bunch of feathers out. The ones on her chest quickly returned and she tore half of those back out a few days ago. It looks like she is leaving the ones on her back alone but she has a lot of pins from her previous tantrum.
When we arrived, all of the birds were hanging out outside on the roof. I think that was their main hangout spot during the day. They have a wonderfully sweet (and very rare) conure. I have never seen one like it but it looks similar to a slinder billed conure with a brown patch on the forehead, all green body and maroon tail. Anyone know what that is? It certainly wasn't a green cheek. They also have a very small umbrella cockatoo who was out for blood when they stepped her up on my arm. I almost lost part of my face but managed to jump back in time! The woman is going to talk with her family and is thinking about sending those birds to us as well. The too was mutilating her feathers...poor baby.
Anyhow, here are pictures of the sweet Sydney.
