Another bird dies because of this type of water/food dish.
A parakeet broke its neck in it.

That even looks like a stupid way to give food and water. Who in their right mind?????
Evelyn
Larry, was the bird posted to get that diagnosis, or was a dead bird found with a floppy neck ?
I ask this because the neck muscles are about the weakest on a corpse, and many many death are attributed to "broken neck" when actually the cause was undetermined and was probably bacterial/viral problem.

Parakeets and other small birds have been raised for decades with that inexpensive type of waterer, or tubes with a small trough. Maybe it was a particularly dumb bird and it got stuck in it and drowned, I doubt we'll ever know the entire story. They are not known to be great swimmers.

The first thing my birds would do is try to stick their heads up in it as far as they could.

Don -
A question. I didn't think any birds could swim except water birds. Am I wrong? I see songbirds in our birdbaths all the time, but the water is not so deep their feet can't reach the bottom.
Evelyn
Well, I no longer keep parakeets, they are great littlebirds tho, and I started with them in 1958 - But the smallest bird here would have a waterer like that in even smaller pieces in a new york minute.

Nope you are correct - psittacines cannot swim, they don't float worth a dang either - which is why I said(tic) "they are not known to be great swimmers".
In my limited experience I find that wet parrots cannot fly well either - I have caught a few wet ones :)

Thanks, Don.
I learn something new every day here.
And how come you haven't volunteered for the Editors' Committee for the book.
I was thinking you would be great doing a short section on buying baby birds; don't buy from breeders who will sell you an unweaned bird, the dangers of trying to wean yourself if you don't know how, etc. Maybe what to look for in a breeder if you want a baby. Open aviaries v. closed?

I see You've already got it covered with your list of topics.
I'm not much for editing, and I find the 10D's switch easily.
Rule 1 - don't buy from Ferengies.

Those were just topics I was suggesting. We need somebody to do the research and write the text. In your case, I figure it is all in your head already.
We're calling everybody on the committee an editor, but for special articles, all the person has to do is write the article. Don't worry about typos, spelling, syntax, etc. I can fix all of that if any is needed.
Will you do it?
What's a "10D"

I'm still wanting to read the answer to my original question on the matter of the dead bird - Was a post mortem done on the bird and a broken neck diagnosed as the cause of death, or was it just found dead with a limp neck ? It makes a big difference, not only in the responsibility for selling/supplying what may be a dangerous object, or an owner who had a sick bird and wasn't aware of it. There is a responsibility to know the cause.
Or do we just blame the waterer and get another $5 bird... ?

So true Don. it is easy to assume but to know is often a leap away from assumption.

Oh! I was trying to come up with some editing term.
Will you do it? Will ya? Huh, huh, huh.

""Oh! I was trying to come up with some editing term."
It's for when one has ones foot in ones mouth and that one needs to change feet.....could be an editing problem at times.
and I don't like being edited, or is that censored ? :)
