Oh, so when we woke up this morning, I could hear Carl wresteling around on his heated perch (hard plastic so his nails make noise). This is our first clue that he is itchy and un-comfortable....

So we wake up, get him into the bathroom, and yep he is picking again. It is pretty shallow so far, just about the size of a dime this time though.

Carl has several large chest feathers that he will pinch down to the skin and break it off. Or it could possibly be that as it grows in he will start to mess/bite at it then. Either way, the featehr folicle startes to get irritated so he will pick at the feather and the skin around the feather. Normally we see just his normal one feather that he does this to, but this time there were 2.... So out came the medicated cleaner from the vet, and the georges aloe gel for on top of just the wound, and the cone is back on. Which leads him to sit in his cage and click his beak constantly out of irritation.

Poor guy, I just don't know what else to do for him. We have had him 2 1/2 years now, and last spring was the first time that he started picking with us. It was when we were in the process of buying our first home, and we were out of the house more because the new home was an hours drive away. We got him healed up and over the late summer and early fall he was ok. Around late Sept he dug in again, but we caught it sooner as we had started to notice small behaviour changes in him when he starts his picking.:glare:

So it will be at least a couple weeks that he will have to stay in the cone. Out on the weekends/evenings when we can watch him very closely, and of course for showers. I just feel so bad for the little guy. He even eats less when he is in his cone, well of course it is difficult to do anything with that thing on, but I will make sure to give him extra of his favorites....

Oh Julie,
how very frustrating for you. I'm so sorry about Mr. Carl. I was really hoping he would be over this picking stuff, but it looks like a hormonal thing. I would be really frustrated. Do you just leave Carl in the cone long enough for his owie to heal? How often do you bathe him? What kind of food is he on? You might try putting him to bed earlier at night to throw his hormones off a little...don't offer him high protien foods. I would suggest moving his cage to throw him off as well, but you just moved him so that is likely not helping with the hormones. Big hugs from NM. Your still the best bird mommy ever. :)

We are starting to think that he was a picker/digger before we brougt him home. We were adoped by him when he was 6 years old, and it was after a year and a half that we noticed his first picking spot. I think it truly took him that long to get through the honeymoon period and feel truly a part of our flock.

Normally with the cone we will leave him in for the first couple days, but he does not eat or really sleep that much while he is in it, so we try to get him out at much as possible. Definately in it over night while he still has a tough scab, but if his nerotic behaviours calm down then he will get to stay out longer. I try to let him out every evening for a good 3 - 5 hours so he can do some light preening and get some good large meal. I am weighing him to make sure he does not loose too much. He is on a mostly seed diet, with some "organic" pellets in there as well. He gets a hot veggie/pasta mix for breakfast about 5 - 6 mornings a week, and whatever we have for dinner is his dinner. He is a huge carb fan, and will eat a little veggies, does not care for fruit. His favorite treat is piscacioes, and loves the shell on peanuts... I know crazy too....

We can not put him to bed early because he screams his terrified flock call if we do. He will not stop until he is either in time out, or we come to bed, so for everyones sanity we keep him up with us. Wow the latest we stay up on week nights is 9pm, and 10pm on the weekends.... He gets a good amount of sleep every night...

I'm truly just starting to think that he had this behaviour before we had him, and this is the only way he knows how to "deal" with the season. Just so darn frustrating cause I know he is in pain, and I feel so guilty for putting him in that cone, but I do it to keep him safe.....
