I will get some pics and post later this evening.
Let's see...
I know she is femal (hen).
She is mostly brown with light brown on her chest.
She is very nesty.
She is a good eater - but most of the time she just pecks at her food.

On the serious side... how long is the quarnteen period???
too&me
02-06-2008, 06:31 PM
Quarantene should last for 30 to 60 days or whenever you Vet says ok.
Larry, Baby and Me
02-06-2008, 06:41 PM
Thanks...
I don't want her to get around Baby until the quarnteen period is over.
Unfortunately our home is small. Baby's cage is in the living room and the other cage is in the living room as well. We only have a two bedroom and my office takes up one of them.
So - my problem is --- where to keep the new bird.
I have her outside for the time being... but I do need to figure it all out.
Fortunatly the weather is warm here in Florida.

I am trying to do five things at once here. I had a client all day... I just got in - I have to take care of two birds... get something to eat... oh boy.
Okay - She is the sweetest thing. She has all her wing feathers but she won't or maybe can't fly - she is a bit over weight. I don't know - maybe she is too fat to fly.
She is a little shy. She comes to me when she wants to.
I don't think she was ever taught how to step up.
She loves it when I make the kissy sounds. She perks right up and looks around and then looks me straight in the eye.
She really is sweet.
I don't think she can talk.... but she makes

Hey ladies - cut me some slack.
No -Anna - I am not sleeping on the couch... not tonight at least.
I am trying my best. I am sitting here in front of this computer and eating my sup at the same time. Trying to get this camera to behave so I can post a pic or two.
She is the sweetest thing. But I am worried about her not being aable to fly. SHe is an adult - but she is very overweight. Maybe that is the reason.

We have a wooded lots on each side of us. Since we bought this house five years ago - I hear the roosters crowing in the distance on one side of us and then on the other side I hear another rooster crowing in the distance. And they keep that up for quite a while... talking the night away to each other.
So, it was not a surprise when about a week ago - it got a little brisk at night. I want outside to take a little walk and I spied a chicken perched up on the windshield - on the wiper blades. She was keeping warm from the heat of the engine.
I talked to her and we got to be buddiesb over the next few days. She came back night after night to roost on the warm hood. My wife is not a country girl. She didn't appreciate that chicken roosting on her car when she went out to go to work.
But - surprising - that chicken sought be out during the day. I made little kissy sounds and she clucked back to me. We kept up this conversation for a long time. I then got her some water and some feed.
Now she is a permanant resident.
I do love eggs in the morning.
What do yo think we should call her??? The name Chicken is already taken.

Ok... So... How about Lucy. She's got the red on top of her head.
Or Big Bird because she's so fat.
Or Big Momma Because she's a hen.
Or 'EM, short for Egg Machine. (this would be pronounced like you know someone named Emily and call her Em.)
I'm running out of ideas!

"The Little Chick That Grew Up"
Here is a little story about me and why I have such a passion for birds.
I was 4-1/2 years old when on Easter morning my brother, my cousin, and I were each given little baby colored chicks. They were called Pee-Pees. Mine was blue and I named him Charley. Well - my brother's soon died and then my cousin's. But in my little hands Charley thrived. I got up early each morning to give him fresh water and food - I remember it was corn meal and the water bottle was something my Grandfather had rigged up. It was similar to the Lixit bottles we have today.
Over a short period of time Charley lost his blue dye coloring and turned a wonderful brown with little speckles of black and white mixed in. I kept feeding Charley and he kept getting bigger. When finally, my Grandmother didn't appreciate this chicken running around the house. So... it was decided to take Charley to my Great Aunt's farm where he could roam free and have a better life than running around in the kitchen under foot. You see - I was not consulted in this matter because I was only 4-1/2 years old. So off to the farm with me in the back seat and Charley on my lap. I do remember him looking out the window at all the wonderful things passing by.
We finally got to the farm... but I don't remember much about our visit there that day. I was told by my Uncle Frank that Charley would have a wonderful time with them and all their other chickens. And I could come back in the summer time to visit Charley. So I resigned myself to the fact that Charley was not coming back home with me but he had to stay with Aunt Annie and Uncle Frank.
Time passed... you know how it is with a small child - it was forever till summer. Then we took our usual summer weekend trip to the farm. I didn't see Charley anywhere. I tried to find him but he just wasn't anywhere around. Later that day we all sat down to Sunday dinner. We always had big meals when we went to visit Aunt Annie and Uncle Frank. You know the kind... mashed potatoes, gravy, peas, corn, and "fried chicken".
Yep... you guessed it... we had Charley for dinner - not as a guest - but on the plate.
I will be 63 years old by the end of this month and I can still see the entire event clearly in my mind.
So... now I think you have a better understanding of why I have such a passion for saving our birds.
Larry

So Larry, are you going to build her a nice high resting spot in the back yard for her, that is protected from the weather? I'm sure she, and your wife, will appreciate it!
