We're looking for a high grade air purifier to put in the aviary as the air out there is less than good quality and the little one we have out there now just isn't cutting it. Can anyone suggest a high quality, commercial grade hepa purifier? The goal would obviously be to find one that can handle a lot of dust and dander so that the thing does not get plugged up right away. Do they make any of them specifically designed for bird keepers? Any suggestions would be great. We need to order ASAP so that our allergies can take a vacation.

Anna, Here is a copy of a post I did on Hunter... But with as many birds you have - you might need something more powerful - I certainly would not know what that would be. My Hunter runs all the time and it is quiet.

---------

I chose the Hunter because Lowe's carries them. I can get my filters locally which is a big help.

Here is one similar to mine, but mine does not have the ionizer. With this model you can trun off the ionizer. It also has the permanant filter which is not my choice, but some like those types of filters

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?actio...547&lpage=none (http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=140387-79-30547&lpage=none)

This is the Hunter model I have...

It does not have the ionizer (which you will never use) and it has disposable filters. Disposible filters just make sense to me. When they get dirty - just take those nasty things and throw them in the trash and put in a new clean fresh one. A model with a permanant filter that you must take out and wash is not my idea of clean.

Ours is in the bedroom where we sleep. If you can only afford one filter - that would be the best place to put it. You should also clean and/or replace your heating/cooling filters at least once a month.

Oh by the way... ours runs 24/7 - it is never turned off... just turned to low during the day.

I hope this helps.

I have that same one, actually I have 2 of them. One for the livingroom & one for my room.

This is the one that we use. There is a "pre" filter (a wrap around cloth filter), that we take off about every other month and vaccume, and then a main filter. We have had the system for 4 years now, and only replaced the main filter cartrage 1x, although the replacement main filter is normally around $50.00 but you can get them everywhere. Sears normally always has them. It has 3 or 4 speeds I believe.

I'm looking at getting one- I don't know if I'm getting seasonal allergies or what- but this one (http://www.nutriteam.com/servlet/.264397fd/the-Austin-Air-Purifiers/Categories) came highly recommended to me. Not really in my price range right now, but it looks REALLY nice. Just a thought if anyone wants to try it out. If I do end up getting it I'll let you know how it works.

I own 3, a jr and 2 pet ones. My Jr has run continuously for 9 years and I love it. It does make a difference. With 3 toos and 2 CAGS it does make a difference with the dust. I also have allergies but once in the house with the filters I am pretty good. Pine pollen season is starting as well as lugustroms blooming both of which play major havoc for people with allergies. My filters work. They are quite sturdy as well. You get excellent room air exchange.

Now, if it is too pricey people have done well with honeywell filters. They just change the filters a little more often.

As you see, I did repeat and buy more.

If you had to get just one- which would you get, the Jr or the Pet? I'm probably going to order this week, and I can't decide. While I do have lots of pets, I also have allergies and chemical sensitivies. Any advice?
