Help an old lady. Where is that article? I think Larry posted it.

I bought magnets today and tried it. With the fine powder crumbs of Zupreem, some of the stuck to the magnet.

Dot I ckd Larrys post from the member list..but did not find this particular post..I do remember it..because Anna ckd hers with a grab tool & it did not stick..I'm no expert..but I would toss it..ckd mine & did not stick..I think..if I remember well..that Larry said metal in pellets was due to the machinery putting off tiny pieces of metal that settle to the bottom..or actually fall into the food preperation..I'll keep looking for the post..but I'm sure when Larry finds your post he will be more than happy to give an expert opinion since he has done so much research on metal & lead..

 Sorry I couldn't be more help

Dot, Here is a copy of my post. The article says to wipe the magnet with a paper towel. Sometimes the pellet particles (not metal) will stick to the magnet because of static electricity and are not metal particles. But it appears if there are metal particles in the pellets you can see them jump to the magnet. The particles that this lady found were the size of a tiny grain of fine sand... very small. I would wipe the magnet with a paper towel, and run the magnet through the pellet residue... bottom of the bag stuff. Then I would look at the magnet through a magnifying glass.

I couldn't get out of this lady what foods had metal in them - but reading between the lines with what she said to me over the phone was --- Harrisons and Kaytee hand rearing formula. But - this is not gosiple... she tested 15 different brands and found metal in most.

I have a bag of ZuPreem all natural pellets that I tested and this batch came out okay.

Here is a copy of my earlier post...

Here is something I overlooked that Jen posted when we were talking about her Reggie's zinc poisoning. She posted this link and I just now had time to read the article.

For those who do not have time to read the entire article - here is the reader's digest version:

So one day several years ago when we saw him sitting alone quietly, we knew something was drastically wrong. After a rush to our avian veterinarian and cultures and blood tests that revealed nothing wrong, we insisted on an x-ray. The previous year we had lost a red lory who exhibited similar symptoms and had been extensively treated with antibiotics. After seeing no results, we finally had him x-rayed and discovered five tiny pieces of metal in his gizzard. Too much time had elapsed before we discovered the real source of the problem and we lost him before we could even begin the chelation treatment...

...By this time we had, of course, changed formulas and checked with a magnet every powdered product we fed any of our birds. We were shocked to find metal particles in many of the powdered foods we tested, including powdered greens and other “people” food from the health food store. The particles varied from one to fifteen pieces per container, so they are not found in every scoop tested nor can they be visibly detected by looking at the powder...

...Pellets are difficult to test this way, as the particles are too small to respond from inside the pellet. We had fifteen different kinds of pellets x-rayed and metal filings were found in almost every one...
