I would have been putty in his/her little claws.

My birds' nails need clipping. I can pick up their feet and believe I could clip them myself, but I'm scared I might cut too close and make them bleed.

I hate for the vet to do it because he wraps them up in towels (actually his vet tech does it). They hate it.

Anybody who can tell me how close to cut that isn't too close? I don't want to use a Dremel. I think the noise will scare them.

It is so cute when they are so pure and honest! Makes you feel like a million and five bucks!.

I don't even cut Chicken's claws anymore. He does SO well with the dremmel that I just keep them trimmed that way...

My grey will just lay in our laps while we use an emery (s/p sorry?) board on her. Not one of the supper soft ones, but a medium grade. For the first couple times, just dull the point, but as they get used to it you can take it a little further. We have often used the dremmel on them too, but we prefer the emery board, as it is much less scary. If they totally dis-like the process you can towel them, or try to do a nail at a time through the cage as they hold on! Let us know how it goes!

We only "clip" the tiels using the clippers, everyone else will use the files.

Harry enjoys having his nails filed with an Emory board ever since he watched a CAG getting his done on UTube. I can even rub it gently on either side of his beak by his request. Harry is a Utube fan boy.

the way I taught Bambam to let me file his with an emory board was to give him his own..he now sits on top of his cage as I file each one..when he gets bored I keep telling him..just a few more min:pif you let momma do this..you can sit on mommaz arm..it works every time:dancered:I'm too clumsy to use a dremal..besides he hates the noise..

That BamBam! What a lover! My little Benny Boy says I love you in the softest, sweetest way and says it over and over again while i'm out cleaning the aviary. Every time I look at him, he is hanging from the bars, just as close to me as he can get. He's got me wrapped around his little talon.

As far as cutting nails, the best way not to make them bleed is to just barely clip the sharp tip off, though even with that I have made birds bleed before. I always dred doing Benny because when he does bleed, it just bleeds and bleeds forever.

I use a high quality finger nail file. I started filing Baby's nails when she was very young and I continue to this day. I file them so they are blunted. Since I have a regular routine - once a week, I don't have to worry about filing off too much.

You can feel the little ridge under their nail where the nail stops and the quick begins.

I would begin by filing until blunt and make a regular habit of it.
