Some of you have been curious about my screen name so I decided it would be fun to share Foxer with you all. As most of you know, I am an artist and have been ever since I can remember. When I was a child and into my pre-teen years I really didn't have many friends. My peers were afraid of me and picked on me because I had been born blind, with cateracts in both eyes, and have to wear bi-focal glasses which make me look a little "different." So I spent a lot of my time drawing and loved to draw little comic strips (and still do).
When I was 11 or 12, I thought it would be fun to take a photograph of myself and photos of my friends and combine them with animals to make little cartoon characters that represented each of us. When I was younger (and before I had discovered the joy of parrots) I was very much into wolves. There was something about them that seemed so natural, so wild, and most importantly, so free. In a lot of ways I felt insecure and trapped in who I was and what I was not and I wanted to be more free. But there was also something that seemed out of control when I thought of the wolf...perhaps their primal instincts seemed too abrasive to me. It was that feeling that led me to ponder over the fox. Foxes seemed to be more humble and gentle, both qualities that I always wanted in my life. I thought if I could combine the qualities of a wolf and the qualities of the fox then I could have a character that really represented me for what I would always strive to be.
So out of my bordem and creativity came a little creature I affectionately called "Foxer" and the name just stuck! I use it even today because it's just a little reminder to me to strive to be all of those things that I had one day hoped to be. So my screen name is Foxer's Artist. Foxer is me but I am also the artist of Foxer. I guess that just goes to show that we make ourselves what we are. We are not made one way or another. We always have a choice to be what we want to be and we are always growing.
Here's Foxer!
