Teka was a 12 year old Jenday conure that was surrendered to our rescue last month along with many others who had been neglected due to their owner losing interest in them. We didn't get to know Teka very well because she was placed into foster care the day we got her, but her foster family had become really attached. Teka was a little bully. she was very cage protective but she had a soft spot that her new foster family worked really hard to bring out. They had been so pleased by her progress and we were proud of her too. They had gotten her to a point where she had become so trusting - allowing them to take her out of her cage every day to spend some time with them. We saw Teka last week when the foster family brought her back to be vetted and the vet said she looked very healthy. Teka was a good weight, ate well, had lots of energy and was full of life. Teka's foster family reported her to be "just fine" yesterday when they took her out to play. This morning they found her laying on her back on the bottom of her cage, barely alive. They tried to call me but could not get through (a fantastic time for me to take a shower, I guess) so they rushed her to the closest vet. Teka passed away moments after arriving at the vets office. A necropsy will be done this afternoon to identify cause of death. Please pray for Teka's foster family as they were crushed this morning. We do not plan to notify Teka's previous owner as she indicated that she did not want progress reports on the birds. We are so sad that such a beautiful little life has left this world. Teka had sucha bright personality and though I knew she was going to be a more challenging bird to place with a new family, I hoped that she would find a special place where she would know love and kindness. I am so thankful to my foster family that she got to know love and kindness in her last days. We will keep everyone up to date on what the cause of death is found to have been. Rest in peace my little one.

Crushing and wonderful all at the same time. Sudden deaths are so hard to deal with and my heart goes out to the foster family.

RIP little Teka. I'm glad she had love in her last days. Such a shame her life was taken so quickly after it had been turned around for her. Fly free little one.

Thank you to everyone for condolences and warm wishes for the next chapter in Tekas journey. Our avian vet called just a few minutes ago to let us know the results of Teka's necropsy. She said that there was no mistaking the cause. The aorta of the left ventrical of Teka's heart had exploded, revealing a visible hole in her heart (called traumatic aortic rupture). She had a massive heart attack. The vet stated that in every other way, Teka was an example of perfect health. There could have been no way to predict the heart attack or to prevent it. It's just one of those things. She said that due to the damage, Teka could not have been in a weakened state more than 15 minutes. Our foster family probably found her seconds or minutes after the attack and she did not have to die alone. With a sudden condition like this, Teka would have been expected to be feeling fine this morning before the attack. I have not yet called my foster family but I know that they are going to feel a great sense of relief that, indeed, they had done everything right with the little Teka - or I guess it should have maybe been Teko as the vet remarked that Teka was a male. Thanks for continued prayers for all of those that Teka blessed while she was here.

I've got tears. That is so sad. I'm so happy she knew what it was like to be loved for at least a little while.
