Hi, I haven't been on in quite some time, but I need some help. I have a baby bird here and I'm not sure how to take care of it....I raised moonlight from 5 wks old, but this is a wild baby bird and I am at a loss...my neighbor told me about it, his 10 year old son shot the mother with a b b gun the day before yesterday, at least we think thats what happened, and yesterday he said he seen 4 baby birds hopping on the ground (the nest was in a small tree in his yard). So this morning I came over and all I could find was one....it has a good bit of feathers, and I have a worm bed (fishing) and I tried smashing one up but it wouldn't have anything to do with it...I did manage to get it to take a little warm water from a med. spoon though...does any one have any idea what I should do? I just cant see letting it starve to death or get eaten by something...any help would be wonderful. Thank you!

BTW Moonlight is still a brat, (as all toos should be) and doing wonderfully!

Moonlight stories soon please!

about the baby bird~ make sure to keep it away from your flock and clean yourself up before touching them. A couple years ago I found a baby blue jay and actually got to see it feather out. I fed baby bird formula with a syringe, then went up to baby food. good luck.

Thanks for the input, I have been keeping it in my room in a tub with a baby blanket...and lots of hand sanitizer. Also, I don't have any more bird formula...I din't plan on raising another after moonlight, and I'm not sure if I will be able to get to a store to get any before tomorrow....if its mom did die the day before yesterday, then that doesn't leave much time...is there something else I can give it?
And I will be giving a good update on moonlight asap!

try making a powder from some pellets and mixing a bit of water.
Do you have a cluse what kind of bird it is? I did a google search and found some birds you can crunch up some bugs and feed them as that's what their parents feed them.

What kind of bird? If it is an insect eater soaked dog chow or cat chow will be good or feeding formula for insect eaters. If it is more of a seed eater then the hand raising formula we use with Parrot type or Keet and Finches will work. there should be a way of contacting a wildlife rehabber in your area who can give you tips or take over care.

Well, I tried the dog food aproach, it worked very well, but I'm not sure what kind of bird it is...it looks like one of those common little brown birds...not sure what they are called, but I know you see them around here at mc donalds waiting for french fries and dropped food, lol. the only thing I know for sure is that it is not a mocking bird, dove, or killdeer...and it was in a very small nest in a tree...I can't remember how to post a picture or a video, but if someone can give me their email, I will send it to them to post, maybe someone will know what it is...I wasn't sure how much to feed, but it ate about 5 pinches (mush dog food) it still put up a fight, had to gently pull beak open, but once the food was in its mouth bobbed it on down!!! Oh, and I tried our local DNR and SPCA...they were no help, pretty much said to put it out and let it fend for itself...sorry, cant do it! And thank you guys for all the great info!!!

Oh, I just talked to the neighbor again, and he said that the one his son killed was a brown bird about the size of a mocking bird....he thought it was called a starling...

I think I offered food every 4 hours with the one I had. You should be able to judge with the response you get when you offer. Let's hope for a more knowledgable answer.
