Jeebie continues to heal and do well. Back to the vet in about a week. Yesterday we took off the horrible collar for about 3 hours and he sat with us. He preened like crazy since he can't with that collar on. The good news is he didn't attack his feet or bother the bandage at all. We did have to put the collar back on before bedtime because the vet says he can't be trusted until he's fully healed. I think the new medication is working. He's still on antibiotics and pain meds plus the new medication.

Thanks so much everyone for keeping Jeebie in your thoughts. Here are a couple of pics from yesterday without the collar and a pretty bad picture in the collar. It was with my cell phone so it's kind of dark but you get the idea of the torture collar.

Aww little Jeebie, you are a sweetie.

what did his previous owners do? wipe up the floor with him? poor little guy. I'm sure he'll love a bath once you get the ok from the vet to let him get wet, and I'm sure you're going crazy! have you tried petting him with a wash cloth?

big hugs to you for taking him in and caring for him.

He sure is a trooper. That is one serious collar.
I'm glad that he's healing though and I agree with Brenda that he'll love getting his first bath when this ordeal is over.

What a little sweet heart. Donna - you have done so well with him and I really admirer your patience and willingness to do whatever it takes to help these birds. I know how financially and emotionally straining it can be but you are a real trooper. Thanks so much for helping Jeebie and the others under your care.

Y'all are sweet. He's just so great. I couldn't look in his eyes and not do anything. And hey, I love PB&J sandwiches...lol.

Birdie--The previous owners said he rolled around on the newspaper on the bottom of the cage. He was so much worse when he came here. We wipe him a little at a time because I don't want to stress him even more. I think after the vet we're going to take a nice warm shower and see if I can get some of that off. His leg is pretty protected by the bandaging. Does anyone know what I can use to help wash him?

Just plain water is the best thing, lots of it. It will take several good showers or baths before he is all shiny clean again.

Benny boy was grey when we first got him. It took nearly 2 months of bathing before he started to lose the grey and a full molt before he was white again. It may take time but he'll get there.

I'm not sure what it is that must come off but Dawn dish soap is safe to use on them. That is what is used when birds have come into contact with oil spills. If I remember correctly, just use a couple of drops at most.

Your doing great work with that little one, keep hanging in there.

me&too, FoxersArtist, I've been rubbing him with water and I swear he gets blacker. It's almost funny. I still think they must have had him wrapped in newspaper or something.

Macaw Lover, I'd read that about the Dawn and oil spills. I might try a couple of drops mixed with water and see. I'd love to see him clean at least. He's a trooper let me tell you. Never screams or complains though I really wish he'd let out a few of those Cockatoo hollers. Then I'd know he was feeling better.

Is it possible that it could be cigarette smoke that has stained him?

me&too, to me it looks like newsprint. I guess it could be cigarette smoke. Although they said they didn't smoke in the house because I asked that question. We smoke but only outside. I don't want to subject my babies to that so rain, shine, snow, sleet or hail, we're outside like dummies. LOL.

I am glad you don't want to subject your babies to the smoke and I don't want to offend you, but why do you subject your lungs to all that? I don't think a lot of smokers realize that the smoke clings to them for a long time and a non smoker can tell when someone has been smoking because of it even if they have been outside thinking they have aired themselves outside long enough. It is still on your clothes, in your hair and on your skin when you come in and your flock is still getting some of it. I can still remember in school the lung of a smoker in a jar - it was just black.

Your babies NEED you healthy. Where would Jeebie be right now if you could not be taking care of him? Your house, your rules - but..................

I have to add that even the placenta of a smoking mother is discolored and has black dead spots on it. That tar really sticks to surfaces like feathers.

You didn't offend me at all. It's nice you bother to say something. ;) I really am trying to quit. I've gone from 1 1/2 packs a day before my first parrot, Morgan, to a little less than 1/2 a pack a day now--most away from home. My boss actually bought me this electronic cigarette thing that has nicotine but nothing else and no smoke, no odor, no fire. Hopefully soon I'll be able to quit completely. It's a very difficult habit to quit.
