View Full Version : Prayers for Orbit

I really don't like the way this year has been going with the birds. Bhodi was killed when his new owners used a teflon pan, then we lost little Easter to an acute onset of Fatty Liver Disease from years of a poor diet with her previous owner. I do not blame myself for losing them but am very hurt over their losses.

Last night I went into the aviary to say goodnight to everybirdy as I do every night. I noticed that Orbit had not touched his food, which is usually mostly gone halfway through the day. His poops were mostly urates. I thought that was odd so I took him out. His grip was really light and he was wobbling. He has been losing a little bit of weight since his diet change, but I figured it was likely due to the fact that the nectar they are now on has less filler in it than their old stuff and he has not been underweight.

I brought Orbit in the house and warmed him some nectar and tried to handfeed him. He wouldn't take any. He was cold, so I wrapped him in a warm towel and held him. He got a lot weaker as I held him and I panicked since it was too late to see any vet who deals with birds. I did not know if the size SS tube I have is safe for him so instead I got the idea that he might eat something really sweet, which would also help his blood sugar. I chose agave nectar because it has a considerably lower glycemic load than regular sugar since it is from fruit and has some nutritional value. Orbit licked up almost a whole cc and I watched him bounce back to life a little. I put him in an incubator with a heating pad and prayed he would live until this morning when I could get him to the vets.

I checked on him every hour to make sure he was ok. My vets office was closed, which I always dred and when they are closed, another vets office is on call for them. I was able to get Orbit in this morning to see another avian specialist who did a CBC, gram stain and examined him. His gram stain showed lots of gram negative bacteria and the vet thinks he has a GI infection. I crumbled when I heard the result but felt relieved that maybe it isn't something uncurable. I feel unimaginably guilty. Was it my fault? We always wash bowls with hot soapy water, and change waters twice a day. He has not been exposed to fresh food that sits. Should I have been changing his water more often? The vet said that the bacteria could have come from anywhere - carried on fruit and veggies, most likely, or onset by too much stress, even though nothing has really changed in the aviary recently. Now I'm worried about Mars too, since she eats a lot of the same things.

The vet did not have any type of lory powder or nectar to tube feed Orbit, despite him being really weak. I have heard that baby bird formula is ok, but would not want to irritate an already very unhappy GI system. The vet would not give me the right size tube for fear that I might kill the bird since they do not normally work with me or know me, but indicated that the tube I have will work, even though it is small enough to fit down both holes in his throat with ease. I got Orbit back home, gave him his antibiotic and some more agave nectar to give me a little time to pull myself together. It has been several years since I tube fed Tiki and Orbit is so near to my heart that I would never forgive myself if I hurt him. He's my baby. I ran over to a friends to get a bigger feeding tube, one that might have less risk of sliding down the windpipe, but when I got there, I quickly realized that it is way too big. My friend was able to offer a lot of support, which was probably exactly what I needed.

I came home and mixed his nectar. I felt the tube on my finger as it went in and let out a big sigh. I felt an instant relief to know that he has a full crop at least for a little while. He is standing a little taller and even went over to pick at some of the nectar in his dish in the incubator.

Please keep my baby in your prayers and pray also that I would have the nerve to continue to care for him at least over the weekend until my vets office opens again. I know that I would never attempt feeding him unless I was sure the tube was down the right side, but it is still really frazzling when it is one you are so attached to and you know that accidents happen sometimes.

Prayers you have. Keep feeding him the good nectar. Nothing wrong with some juices either as it may give him more of a jump.

Orbit is doing a little better tonight. He seems to be enjoying the warm heating pad which is keeping his fuzzy rump warm. He is still perked up from his feeding earlier though I did decide to give him a little more agave nectar tonight anyway as an added boost. I will tube him again this evening to make sure he has a full tummy before bed. It looks like he has been picking at his nectar in the incubator but has not dipped any in the water. He is a little bit afraid of me as he thinks everytime I come for him, I am coming to wrap him in a towel. He has not had a pleasant day, so I understand his upset, but fear because lories seem to hold grudges forever. I tried to coax a few words or noises out of him as he is usually a chatterbox, but I couldn't get a peep from him. I am praying for a quick response to the antibiotics.

Anna,

With all the birds in your care that you have, you sure have a keen eye on each of them.

Orbit couldn't be in better hands than yours.

Orbit is not yet eating on his own but he has been full of energy this morning, hopping around in his little ICU unit. I think the antibiotics are starting to take effect. I was able to get him a hearty 7 ccs by tube this morning and his poops are starting to look less black. He is still enjoying the heat but is not sitting as puffed up as before so his body is starting to come out of crisis mode. He is very patient with me when I have to tube him and though he wiggled some while trying to get him to open his mouth, once the tube is down he doesn't try to kick or squirm, thank goodness. He is clearly mad at me for what I am putting him through but I am hoping he will find it in his sweet little heart to forgive me at some point.

It is so hard when you have to force them to do something to help them. Bad enough that they're sick, but then you have that worry about being forgiven. Sorry Anna. I'm so glad he's doing better though.

Yeah....I've had two different reactions from two different birds. My green cheek, Stewy, was never really angry at me...he wasn't crazy about his meds, but it was like he knew I was trying to help. However, my cockatiel Buddy runs from me to this day...but the meds really made him sick, so I think that may have had something to do with it. I honestly believe that ultimately, they know you're trying to help, and still love you after...
It helped to let him know what I was doing...

Orbit's bloodwork came back today and I could tell by the tone of the vet when she called me that the news was not good. She said he was severely anemic with a hematacrit of 10 - just above organ failure. His liver was shutting down and he had 10 times the normal amount of liver enzymes in his blood. She expressed shock that I had kept him alive over the weekend and told me to keep tube feeding him. She told me to return to the vet in the next few days to have his blood drawn again. If he is still very anemic, she thinks the anemia is not caused by an infection and will eventually kill him. If the anemia was caused by infection, he could be ok once his blood regenerates. His liver could heal also as the antibiotics work, or the antibiotics could be too much for his failing liver. We wont know until we draw more blood. Please continue to pray for Orbit.

I came out this morning and saw him eating a little bit on his own which was really encouraging to me. His poops don't look great as they are dark, but they aren't only urates anymore which is positive.

Can someone please give thoughts on offering Orbit a little bit of black strap molasses with his food? Lories are prone to iron storage disease but since he is so anemic would it be helpful to offer a higher amount of iron in his food for now? How much should I offer?

Old fashioned black strap molasses does raise the Iron levels quickly and is easily digested but the only dosage I know is from when I was pregnant. At the time I weighed about 130 and took 2 tablespoons a day, for little Orbit I have no idea. Prayers coming his way.

Despite his lab results, Orbit has enough energy to lean over, fluff his feathers out and whisper at me "Psss-psss!" Followed by a big wet kiss. He must have known that nothing would make me happier than to hear his little voice again. If he is talking, he must be feeling better.

I called my vets office this morning and requested to have all of Orbit's tests sent over to my normal vet (who had been out of town over the weekend, come to find out.) I also was able to ask about the iron supplementation.

When she called me back she had lots of interesting things to say. She advised that because Orbit is a lory and more prone to iron storage disease, she advised against any kind of iron supplement, including black strap molasses. she said that anemia will correct itself a lot quicker than ISD can correct itself so the risk of supplementing would not be worth the possible benefits. She told me that she believes that Orbit had an acute onset of the infection - like food poisoning - and became septic. She thinks this because despite having a lot of bacteria in his gram stain, his white blood cell count was not high, indicating acute onset. I'm not sure how this ties into the anemia, but she said that they can get that anemic very suddenly and that they can rebuild cells almost as quickly. He is responding very well to antibiotics and was even trying to play peek a boo with me through the glass this afternoon. If for some reason it wasn't an infection, it could be an internal bleed which will be harder to find, but we will know more when we redraw his labs on Friday. I was really pleased to see that he was eating on his own this afternoon and had really dirtied his water. The vet said that since he is eating some, I may be able to get away with cutting him back to one feeding per day to encourage him to keep eating. I told my vet she wasn't allowed to go away ever again to which she retorted that she was going out of the country in two weeks for vacation and to brace myself. I told her I would make sure that the birds got the memo.

Here is orbit in his little ICU unit on Saturday.

I have not been able to contain Orbit today. His antics were endless including mumbling through the glass at me every time I got on the telephone, trying to mimic all my words. He has eaten so much on his own today (I refilled his dish 3 times) that I decided against tube feeding and just gave him the antibiotic via syringe. He is having a blast being center stage and still enjoying a little heat on his rump periodically throughout the day. We will have new labs drawn on Friday and will likely know the results by Monday. I will probably take him out of his unit on Friday and put him back in his cage, if he continues to do so well. Oh and my fears that he would no longer like me were just fears. He is back to being a silly snuggle butt and hasn't offered to run or bite at all. He has taken it all in stride, thank goodness.

It seems they are more flexible and tougher than we believe. Your extra special and knowable care made the difference long enough for the antibiotics to kick in.

Orbit is doing great! He has gained around 10 grams back after his ordeal and he is back to his high energy, silly, springy self. I'm still feeling really nervous about their food as I never want another one of my birds to have to go through that, so we have been feeding and watering the lories 3 times a day instead of the two times we were feeding before. I hope that helps. Anyway, I'm really impressed with the little guy for making such a quick recovery and feel very blessed that he is still with us. I have been giving him a few extra cuddles lately and have been telling him how much he means to me.
