I had a BLAST! It was kind of small, but I bought about $40 worth of toys (3 large toys) that would have cost well over $30 each if I had bought them on line or at a bird store. :yeah:
I saw many neat birds and have made a decision on what the next bird will be. I want a Grey. The ones I saw did not talk much. I'm sure it's because they were young and very preoccupied with all the people. But, like everyone here has said before, they are a very dignified looking bird. So, if I have an opportunity to rescue one, I would jump on it in a heart beat.

And on a final note, this is kinda funny, I went to the bird show today and came home with a fish!:haha: We went to Petsmart and I found a BEAUTIFUL blue beta fish. His name is Picies. LOL

Here comes the wet blanket. Since I don't want to hunt for an emoticon for that, I'll say, "Here comes the b:witch:."

Above is a link to "A Warning About Bird Marts" by Laurella Desborough. I have her permission to post this link. Testing was done over a three year period . Below is a chart showing which diseases tested positive. Please read this article and note that they did not do any testing where the birds were. The testing was done on vendors' tables.

Eight different events were tested from around the United States.

There is a graph that shows the results, but it will not paste over here in a form that is easy to read. They found PBFD and Polyoma at each mart, each year.

"It is important to recognize that the disease pathogens are in the air, as well as on virtually everything in the area. People and birds may not have entered with these disease pathogens, but they definitely leave with them." Please make sure you shower before going near your birds and disinfect all toys or cages. I personally would never buy wood at a bird mart. Actually, I will never again go to one. It is not worth the risk.

"Many people are unaware that PBFD and polyomavirus are extremely hardy and may remain stable for upward of one year. A single bird mart can expose thousands of birds to disease. Of all the bird marts tested, not a single one was found to be free of disease. "People come looking for bargains, real or perceived, but the bad news is the diseases are free!" said Dr. Phalen of Texas A&M."

First clean yourself. Wash your hair, the hair in your nose. Clean your fingernails. I treat it as if I had handled a wild bird. I strip at the door then go straight to the shower.

Use whatever disinfectant you use. I use Nolvasan. It is what my vet uses too.

We'll all say a little prayer. I know Don H. takes his babies to bird marts and has never had a problem. We'll just assume you have the same good fortune. It can't be everywhere, but I do feel obligated to share what I learn.

Odd, my vet just mentioned bird marts to me last week when I saw her. We discussed some of the legislature that the AR people are trying to pass. We also discussed the fact that Louisiana is finally stopping cock fighting. That is another way some of these diseases are spread.

HaHaHa! That's the funniest thing I have seen all day...so sorry Dot! (BTW, there were several places like petsmart who had to quarentine everything for a while because people were getting infected with polyoma at the bird mart and then visiting those stores for more supplies. The few times I went to a mart, I was not at all impressed anyway.)

Diane -

Can we use the cartoon in "The Book?"

To everybody else:

Our local bird club puts on a Bird Fair every year, It is our major fundraiser. Most of our vendors put their toys in plastic except for the ones they keep out for demo'ing; and we have sanitizers scattered all over. I know this isn't 100% protection, but it's better than nothing.

We've been separating the birds by as much space as we can, until last year. We put all the birds in one large space. No diseases reported, but we won't do that again. Too crowded. Everybody wanted to see the birds and not the vendors.
