View Full Version : How to Stop Laws From Being Passed?

I got a phone call this afternoon urging me to attend a meeting for city councel next monday. The city of Rio Rancho is moving toward being an "animal friendly" city and by animal friendly they mean friendly to animals by not allowing sale or trade of animals in the city to prevent cruelty and poor living conditions. This law mostly focuses on dogs and cats but exotics are included and it will indicate that people, including rescue groups will only be permitted to house so many animals. Albuquerque has a similar law stating that families may only keep up to 5 dogs and or cats (unless they have a breeding license) but does not specify about exotic animals. If Rio Rancho limits our numbers we will not be able to do rescue, even with a permit. Furthermore, if any animal is permitted to be sold within the city limits, all animals will have to be accompanied by a certificate of health from within the past 7 days which will cost us too much to stay afloat along with any other rescue group in the city. Needless to say I am beside myself. I will be attending the next city councel meeting on Monday but I have no idea where to even begin to combat these perposals. And to make it worse, our good contact with local animal control just quit. Ideas?

Go to Pet Law http://www.pet-law.com/
And click on the Pet-Law List. Ask for advice on how to fight it.

I can't believe that! I understand that some hoarders like to think they are rescueing, but surely there is a way to determine that they are not rehoming any of them. This is ridiculous.

I'm not overly afraid of supervision or rules but agree that this is crazy. I would fully cooperate with needing a permit and even having regular inspections - but maybe that's because I do it the way I say I do. Making laws like the ones mentioned in my first post will not stop hoarders from hoarding and abusers from abusing.

No it won't. But it sure will stop anyone from being able to step in to help the victims.

Go to the meeting but you might get an attorney to help you with this if nothing is resolved at the meeting. That is so crazy.

I would mention that very point that it would not stop those outside the laws but only impede those attempting to alleviate the problems.

What bird organizations do you belong to? That is what the groups are doing to try and help. Genny Wall is an attorney and has spoken to bird groups quite a bit. A lot has been going on in Oregon and Washington state. MT has a couple of posters there that might help. One is Donna and Karl/Sandy may have information of contacts. Tell her what is going on or do a post like here and say you need help in how you should present. A number of people go to that sight and might help you get it together.

Hey there Peggy. I would really like to talk with Donna and someone from another forum already mentioned her. Unfortunately, I am not welcome on MT so I can't post there. Any other way to get in touch with Donna? I have Sandy's e-mail but am sure she would probably rather leap off a tall building than help me, bird related or not. Any help you can give would be great.

Anna, they get all of their information from the ASA list and they get most of theirs from Genny Wall's Pet Law List. See previous email. Or, join ASA and ask for advice there.

* After alleging cruelty at Watermelon Mountain Ranch, she says witnesses have been intimidated

Animal welfare activist Marcy Britton has filed a request to drop her criminal complaint against Lee DiClemente, the co-founder of Watermelon Mountain Ranch.

Her request will be heard by Rio Rancho Municipal Judge Calvin Shields later this month.

When asked why she wants to withdraw the complaint, Britton said her witnesses have been intimidated and don't want to testify.
