Sorry for the delay in updating but all he** seemed to break loose.
First, Jeebie had a great check up. His leg is doing so much better. He's using it more, becoming more fiesty and the vet said it looks great. 2 more weeks on antibiotics and pain meds then back for another check up. He has also gained another 15 grams so his weight is up to 265 grams. Still underweight but nothing like the 212 grams he came in at. He is just a little love bug.

Now, on Tuesday we got a Bare Eyed Cockatoo in that was mutilating his legs. Not treated, no bandage nothing. He had on a ball collar because in June he had chewed under both wings apparently down to the muscle. The ball collar did nothing to keep him from getting to his legs. That started about 2 weeks ago supposedly.
His cage had 2 huge metal plates screwed to 1 side and part of the front because "he was too messy and threw food". Hubby says they are some kind of galvanized tin. Off to the vet and she said 1 leg was terrible and the other was basically alright except he had chewed the feathers off. So, antibiotics and pain meds for him too. Talking with the vet we decided to start with a test for lead/zinc poisoning. The results should be back in about a week and then we go from there depending on the results. He is only 2 years old and the owner was going to have him "put down" because she couldn't afford to take him to the vet. I told her bring him to me and I'll just shake the money tree or sell a kidney but refused to just "put him down".
Will keep updates coming as news comes in.
Thanks for keeping these 2 little guys in your thoughts. They sure could use the positive energy.

Great news for Jeebie, sounds like he is really on the mend. I'm hoping for the same encouraging results for the new BE2. You're a wonderful person with a big heart.

Aw, thanks Anne-Samantha's Mom and Patty, Linus and Co. Most people here just think I'm nutty. When we decided to start a rescue, it was after Moran, my U2. She was really my first bird except for a Quaker years ago that I adored. These birds deserve so much more than they've had. I get so mad sometimes that I feel like fire is going to shoot out of me...lol. I know the economy is tough and money is tight but there's a lot we give up for these guys and I guess I expect other people to do the same, especially for their own birds. We've finally got the ball rolling on our 501(c)(3) and I'm hoping that will help bring in donations and possibly grants. Either way, we'll keep going because these birds deserve the best they can be given.

I agree and understand the economy is tough, but if we are going to keep pets, it's our responsibility to see that they are cared for. If we can't afford to take a bird with an infected leg to the vet, we need to find a home for them that can. A good vet will usually work with you to a degree. I know mine will. I don't mean to sound harsh, but we need to put the well being of our pets high on the priority list.

Poor baby those BE2's are such alive birds it is hard to hear when one is suffering. Good for you for stepping up and taking him under your wing.

Jeebie is sure doing good and I'm sure the new one will also.
I sure wish I could take some in, but I couldn't let them go. I would do terrible at fostering, they would never leave.
You do good things:)

The latest update:
Jeebie--is doing much better. He's still on antibiotics and we're still wrapping his leg. He has another vet appointment next Friday. He's such a little love bug. He just wants to sit and cuddle. He is using his injured leg more and more and the skin color looks a lot better. The vet is very pleased with his progress.

Harley--well we finally got the results from the lead/zinc test back and they were negative. The vet feels it's probably an emotional thing instead of physical but we're going to talk about other tests. For now he's still on his antibiotics and we're fighting to keep him from picking at that leg. We're going to talk to the vet about a different type of collar on Monday. I hate those things but he has to leave the leg alone. We've been afraid to try taking off the ball collar for fear he would start under his wings again. Poor baby, it just kills me to see him have so much going on. This morning I stood by his cage for about 30 minutes and just preened his back and wings where he can't reach. He really seemed to enjoy it...well, before trying to bite me to say enough already.

Will keep updates coming as they happen.

Patty, Linus and Co.--I couldn't agree more. And for God's sake, if they are injured and you can't afford the vet care, don't just let it go, call someone immediately. Both Harley and Jeebie were just left hurt and picking for over a week before either person called me. I told my vet if money ran out, I'd do office work, mop her floors, whatever I had to do to take care of them. I would never let one just suffer untreated. People never cease to amaze me and usually not in a good way.

Will try to get pics of Harley in the next couple of days.

We make them dependent and then are not always ready to fill the void when it isn't convenient for us. So glad you were there to step into that void for both of them. fortunate little guys that you were there for them both. Goffins are so full of cleverness and personality and Bare Eyed are not far behind in the clever clown cattagory. Wonderful birds but challenging and I know they are in very good hands now. Jeebie is one tough little guy and Harley may face amore difficult challenge. Julie and I both have mutulaors, if you need us we are both available to you, sometimes it helps to know you are not the only oe with a bird that is so difficult to help. :hart:

me&too, thank you so much. I have a feeling it's going to be long and difficult with Harley. He has now started to mutilate both his feet. We're going to the vet in the morning to discuss a collar she told me about and/or medication. I just don't know what else to do as much as I hate the idea of both, he's just not stopping. If he can't get to one place it seems like he's picking another. How could 1 bird be so unhappy? It just breaks my heart to see this. I just want to hold him and cuddle him and tell him the bad s**t is over.

Fred seems to be a happy bird he still mutilates and lives in his collar most of the time. He eats well and interacts and now has leaned to fly kind of and is chewing wood and doing the Cockatoo screams. It has taken time for him to do these things and no longer seems so intent on the harmful behaviors. Does Harley end down and stare at this feet before he hurts himself? Fred and Carl Julies BE2 both do that behavior. I try to distract when I see that start up. Some time before he arrived he had his chest surgically repaired and the lady who took him in and had the surgery done tried very hard to improve his diet and help him feels safe. Our Vet had me spray him with a mixture of an antiseptic and and anti yeast compound daily for two weeks after a skin scraping found evidence of yeast and bacteria. He has improved so much but I don't know if they are always curable.

Wow Donna, it seems like you are gtting stuck with quite a load of bills for your new charges. You have such a huge heart and a determination to help where ever you are needed. Is there any way I can help you raise funds? If you have ideas let me know. I know how impossible i can be to have so many vet bills, and yet, they are needed. good luck with your new bare eyed - they are so sweet. Keep us updated on him and please do post photos when you get the chance...we know you are super busy right now!

me&too--I haven't noticed Harley looking at his feet first, but I'll watch closer. He is a really slick little guy. I'll look over and see him starting to chew on his leg and say Harley. When I do he quickly moves his foot to his head like he's scratching his head instead of chewing his leg. Smart little guy. He has the most innocent look, like "what? I was just gonna scratch". I have to admit it's hard to keep an eye on him all day since he's still in quarantine. I'll have to figure out something though even if it means taking him to work with me every day.

Anna--Thanks so much. You are so sweet. I am trying to figure out ways here to do some fund raising but until my 501(c)(3) is done, it's difficult. If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear them. We're working on doing a fund raiser the first weekend in June. We have the space to do it and I thought we might rent space for people to set up tables for a rummage sale, have food and some entertainment. I've already lined up the place and a DJ. Now I have to get the food lined up.

Just keep the good thoughts coming for these 2 little guys. They are both incredible and I just want them healthy and happy.
