About a week ago I was sure that the eggs my little pearl cockatiel was sitting on would not hatch as we waited and waited and then waited some more. I picked up each egg carefully and listened for peeping...no sounds, no movement. They must have gotten too cold at one point. I thought about taking the eggs out when I checked a few days ago as many of them were starting to turn black but decided to let my hen abandon them herself. I absolutely adore baby birds but felt a bit of relief by this recent development (or lack of development) as raising baby birds and doing rescue is a bit anticlimactic and I don't want to be responsible for the further population of unwanted birds.
Still life will find a way. Andy poked his head in the nestbox this morning and came to find me right away. "Did you know we have babies in the nestbox?" he asked. NO!!! SINCE WHEN?! I checked the box on friday but no babies. I even shooed dad out and made mom scoot a bit to make sure that she wasn't hiding any little aliens under her skirt but she must have scooted her little newborns along with her. How in the world could I have missed babies?!
We have 3 chicks - 5 days old, 4 days old, and 3 days old. Welcome to the family little guys. Your human momma is already in love. :smiles:
