View Full Version : Body language - raised shoulder and back feathers
I have decided that Fergie can have the halls. I want her out of her cage. If she wants to stand in front of a closed door, so be it.
I read about this in Barbara Heidenreich's book, but don't remember what she said about those lifted feathers. Notice the head cocked in all the photos. I know the raised nape feathers mean aggression.
Don, do you see lifted feathers like this in a breeding situation?
Just looks pretty casual to me like she's waiting for someone to come thru the door - maybe a bit of a territorial posture - nothing showing real agression that I can see, but you know her better. she looks more inquisitive with the head position like that.

the 1st one she looks like she's on the prowl, the rest look like she's interested in what's behind the door, or how is she gonna reach the knob to open it up. I would tend to say inquisitive myself, but maybe agression if interupted.
cute pics!

If you have posted the pictures in order, I think Fergie is saying "are you following me?" on her way down the hall to get to that interesting part of the wall that opens up.

I call this giving it the "hairy eyeball" but in this case, Fergie does not look alarmed by whatever she sees, just very, very interested and inquisitive. I love to watch macaws cock their heads to the side so they can eyeball something. If her feathers had been slicked back she would have been giving a more alarmed look, but she looks very relaxed there. Remember that when macaws are feeling very threatened their friz their head feathers out and look like they have an afro. They can also friz those feathers up for a good scritch but your fingers won't have a chance at getting near that nape if they are in a bad way! Fergie is so beautiful!

At least she's not staring at your feet! I can sympathize, Louie got me the other day on the foot. I thought I was safe wearing slippers, but he got my heal. He snuck up on me. I think they could teach the army a thing or two about guerrilla warfare. (hide on the net...dive! dive! dive!- hide under the cage...waddle! waddle! waddle!- sneak beak attack!). Of course he had just given me the BEST cuddles! What can I say? Feet are tempting.

Feet are tempting doesn't justify the bite I got on the bottom of my foot. LOL I am saying that just to tell you about the other morning. I have a big Band Aid on the bite, but I put an old white sock over the foot, just in case it kept bleeding. The other night I didn't have any more clean white socks, so I put on a big, thick, green sock. Big mistake. When I let everyone out of jail, two birds came after my feet. LOL

For me, it is next to impossible to tell from a photo what mode a bird is in.
When Baby bends over - butt in the air - feathers a little fluffed - beak and tongue working... she is nesty.

Looks to me like she is curious and ready to play or react to whatever is on the other side of that door.

Anna - do you know where I could get one???
Uhhh - I think Baby would eat it.
She likes chicken - so I don't think a Macaw would stand a chance in this house.
