I am having a bit of a struggle with my mother. She and my father are paying my tuition. She is upset with me because I'm not getting grants and scholarships. I have tried to explain to her a million times that when I lived with them and used their tax returns they made too much money for grants. Now that I am married to my husband he makes too much money. Just because they make too much money doesn't mean there is money laying around to pay for college. I can understand her frustration, I am frustrated as well.
I can sit on fastweb and go through the scholarships and apply for them. That is extremely time consuming and I am in competition with thousands of other applicants in the country. I feel like I'm banging my head against a wall.
If anyone has any information that can help me, I would really appreciate it. If you can't help with information, you can help pray me through.
Thanks for listening.

Hi Bonnie!
I'm sorry you're having such a hard time. It's hard to deal with the stress of school alone. I'm sure feeling pressured to get schallarships isn't helping. I wish I could say that i know how you feel, but I don't. Our state used to give schallarships to anyone who graduated HS with a certain GPA. Luckily, I fit into that catagory, so I never paid for school...then again, I never finished either! When Andy's schollarship ran out his parents really pressured him and ran him through the mill when we would apply online for assistance and never get anywhere. He tried to explain to them that they had been making too much income for him to qualify, but his mother didn't seem to see that as a valid excuse. I think sometimes parents just get a little short sighted. If it makes you feel any better, Andy applied for them all the time, and never got one. It seems like these days, you need to be a minority to get very much assistance. I will pray that your mom would be a bit more understanding of you and your situation. Hang in there.

Bonnie,
I know your frustration. Anna is completely right about what happened with me. I'm fortunate because I won a university scholarship right out of the gate which covered some things but everything else I put in for came back with a big DENIED stamp on it. There are probably a few reasons we have in common for this, but I won't get into them since I have a tendency to polarize with my opinions. Instead, I'm going to give you the piece of advice that my boss gave me but I never managed to find the initiative to take. I wish I had.
My boss's son was in college and was actually a pretty bright kid and did OK as far as the private scholarships were concerned (he didn't get any from the university, this was prior to New Mexico's shotgun approach to issuing scholarships to HS grads). Still, he found that he wasn't paying all of his tuition and definitely wasn't paying for books, gas, and all the other stuff that is a huge part of succeeding in college but that scholarships won't touch. So he sat down and wrote a letter that went something like this:

Dear Company X,
My name is so and so and I'm attending such and such a university planning to graduate in 20XX with a degree in underwater basket-weaving. I am a first generation college student and blah, blah, blah, the difficulties I've overcome, etc., etc., etc.
It is my hope that someday I work in the marine fisheries industry as either a crusty old sailor or the guy who gets thrown overboard. [But try to actually make it something that the company would hire.]
At the present time, I am seeking financial assistance to complete my academic program and any help that your organization can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Struggling College Student

Apparently he sent these letters out to all of the larger businesses operating in the state, as well as some of the really big ones who weren't in the state at all. According to my boss, he did this every year and made thousands.
Seems like it's a little too good to be true, but then again, it is a lot of work and companies do just have cash laying around that they need to get rid of (if I remember accounting correctly, they call this "Misc. Goodwill" on the balance sheet).

Hope this helps...

I just want to say thank you to everyone who sent advice and prayers. Like I said, Momma and I go over this at least once a year. I appreciate everyone who was there for me. Luckily, she's gotten over it and for at least a little while believes that I am doing what I can. Thank you to Andy especially. I feel you honestly know what it's like and it was SO good to read your post and know that there was someone out there that has been in a similar place.
