Psittacosis at Petsmart in Ga! Warning!!
Heads Up everyone!!! I would stear clear of even going into the stores for food or toys at this point:
Reading through the local newspaper today and found report about Petsmart statewide in Georgia has quarantined all bird sales due to several birds testing positive for psittacosis. According to the report in the Cherokee ledger page 12-A dated 1-9-08, this disease can cause flue like symptoms in humans. Can be fatal to birds, but IF caught early enough, can be treated. PetSmart announced it has suspended sales at approximately 775 stores in 46 states served by its primary bird vendor. Disease mostly effects larger birds such as PARROTS! According to PetSmart, cockatiels in 23 stores also tested positive during recent random testing. Company spokesperson Michelle Friedman said the company is committed to addressing the customer concerns. For more information or concerns you can contact PetSmart at 1-800-738-1385 x 2518.
