am home with Loverboy he has a fatty tumor (xanthoma) She gave him some vitamin supplements. He will be getting it removed next Tuesday, it does have to come off if it don’t it will get a lot bigger and he will lose his wing as it is right now she can take it off without any major injury to his wing

I have linked a website with some info on this condition…

I'm glad that you have that under control. Let us know how it all works out. I know I'll be praying for his recovery after the removal of the fatty tumor.

Thank you I will... it is so scary because he will have to go under anaesthetic to have it done ... he is so little 81grams.

I know it's scary but I'm sure everything will be fine, Chrissy. Be brave little buckaroo!

I really feel bad now I feel like I did this to him, I just read something about sunflower seeds being one of the causes of this fatty tumor Last time I bought seed for them I grabbed one with sunflower seeds in, when I got home and saw what I had done I though what can it hurt this one time. That was two weeks ago and now this. No more sunflower seeds in this house. These tumors are usually found in overweight tiels, one thing Loverboy is not is overweight even the vet had to agree it wouldn't hurt him to gain a few grams his keel bone is still very visable...

I just spent the last hour picking out every sunflower seed.

Honey...it takes more than a feeding or two of sunflower seeds to do this. he's had a diet of sunflower or other seeds and nothing else before you got him. His diet is BETTER now...this is NOT your fault!
Understand!? You can't beat yourself up about this...you're doing a wonderful job with him! =)

Chrissy I have been through this with 2 birds. First one was with my second tiel, squeakers many years ago. She had a fatty growth on her belly. A bird specialist did the operation and she did fine. I remember being scared as well since she was so small. But she had the best surgeon and pulled through great. She was feed very well and still had the growth. Zoey (U2) came with a growth by her vet and it was not fatty, but they were worried about it getting too big and intervening with her potting. So we had another great bird person operate and everything went well. So it should work out just fine. I will be keeping you all in my prayers.

Thanks Laura, I am scared because of all the horror stories you hear about the little birds never waking up.... the vet did try to explain that she uses some kind of gas to put them out and as soon as she is done its turned off and they wake them up right away....

Anesthesia has improved. A quick acting anesthetic is used on pediatric pt's as well. It works quick and gets out of their system quick. A couple of my older dogs had it used. They wake up quick, no wobbley walking and just as happy as can be. An experienced vet usually does quite well.

Regarding diet. Tiels are ground feeders and seed feeders in the wild. Yes, sunflower seeds do have fat as many other seeds. It is a problem if that is all they will eat ignoring the rest. You want your bird to eat more...scatter some food on the bottom of the cage...make sure it is small....they frequently will go and pick at it.
