View Full Version : Anybody mix their own food?

I'm thinking about mixing my own parrot food. Everything has something in it I don't want in there: sunflower seeds or safflower seeds or too much fruit or too many seeds, and not enough of the stuff I do want.
I was looking at the different kinds of commercial food, and the first ingredient in most of it is corn; and there is so much stuff I don't even know what it is.
I do a fresh layered salad for their veggies and fruit (mostly veggies and a little fruit and some nuts), but nobody likes everything in it. They mostly pick at it. I know they are not getting everything they need from it. Nobody likes pellets except Oscar.
I'm thinking the feed should contain some pellets, dried veggies, grains, nuts.
Any opinions?
Evelyn
Does anybody do this?

I don't mix mine but I would sure love to. I have a friend that does and was going to try to copy and modify hers. Do you want her recipe? She is a breeder.

I use Don's mix but I add my own dehydrated veggies and fruits to the mix and some walnut and almonds too. I occasionally throw in some pellets if I have weakened and bought some against my better judgment, I am not a fan but when running short on food have been know to buy some when the choices are poor.

I talked to Don about his and would like to try it, but the shipping from there to here is so expensive. I think it costs about as much as the food.
Where do you get the dehydrated veggies.

I use Higgins Mayan blends which you can get in 20# bags. My pet store gets it wholesale for me. The owner uses her AE card and earns lots of points so this helps her with her 2-3 trips she takes a year. I helped also with bird grooming and instead of pay, I get a few free toys (large ones) and again food at whole sale price. Does PL ever do a bulk buy where foster parents can get a bag of food and others order as well so you can get the best price and good shipping? Higgins might even do a deal with them.

I make my own cockateil seed from human grade grains. The commercial blends are not required to be tested. Sadly, the teils won't eat it unless I mix it with a commercial seed which makes it about 50% pointless.

bought a dehydrator froma resale hop for $7.00 cleaned it well even though it looked good. Buy what ever I think looks good wash, chop and dehydrate overnite. Not as good as fresh but a tasty addition and fun colors with still some vitamin content to add in. Have done papaya, pears, star fruit, beets, Italian parsley, kale and bananas so far. I don't worry about something going bad during the day and gives the birds some variety. You can also buy more than is easy to feed out to family and birds in a day or two and just dehydrate the rest to add to soups and stews ect. as well as add to the bird mix.

I found a recipe on the internet called "Mike's Mana". It takes forever to mix and it isn't cheap, BUT the birds LOVE it.
I was told about it on another board a few years ago.
We mix up a big batch and freeze portions of it. Every so often we thaw a bag and give it to the birds. If you have a picky eater, this stuff will win him over.
