Tell her not to give up, and to start right away on all the things that might help find them: ad in the newspaper (offer as much of a reward as you can), posters in all vets and pet-related stores and in the neighborhood, radio, notify all the animal shelters, post on all lost-bird sites.

A good friend recently recovered her CAG who had been gone two months--not much worse for the experience, but she had flown a long way--about 15+ miles.

A poster in a park led to her recovery.

Tell her good luck in finding them. I know she must be beating herself up, but that isn't doing the birds any good, nor will it help in finding them.

I just wanted to stop in and tell everything that I appreciate all of the concern and prayers going up for my babies.
They must be working, because John said that he has the other birds flock calling, and can hear two answer.
So that means that two of my babies are still in the area. Please, keep the prayers going, and give these guys the little nudge in the butts they need to make it the rest of the way home.
I am devastated.
Thank you again for everything.

When my tiel got out, I keept his buddy in a cage outside (where he was supremely safe) and walked around the neighborhood with a picture for hours. Whisteling and calling for him the whole time.

A day later I did find him, and he came running up to me wanting to come home.

Positive thoughts and strength comming out to you....

CrystalinNC
09-29-2008, 12:34 PM
where did you find him?
Was he close?

Julie
09-29-2008, 12:43 PM
He was spotted 3 houses south of ours, and when I actually found him, he was in the neighbors back yard 1 house north of mine.

I was standing in the back yard (crying of course) talking to the person fixing my back door (the door was kicked in during the burglary) and I went inside to clean up my face. I was inside for about a min, and I could hear him screaming his frightened flock call. I think it was because he was trying to get to me while I was talking outside and then when my voice went away he panicked. I ran outisde jumped my neighbors fence, thank god thier dog was in the house, and he ran straight up to me. Getting back over the fence holding a tiel was not the easiest, but you get the picture. Between my voice, and that of his buddies, he managed to stay close to home, and I truly believe that is how we got him back.

My heart goes out to you. I KNOW what this feels like and it is just deavistating. Keep positive. Make sure to bring a picture to your local vets offices, and let your neighbors know you are looking for them.

Neighbors have been alerted. I've made up fliers to post. I'm going to call the humane society today and let them know to be on the lookout. They are posted on Parrot 911, so maybe that will turn up something.
We can hear them in the area....so hopefully, they'll get tired of being wild birds and want to come home.

Julie
09-29-2008, 12:47 PM
Have you put food outside for them? A couple big sprigs of millet close to the house, and possibly leaving an open cage full of food/treat/toys for them? Its a long shot but you never know how home bound thier instincts will be

CrystalinNC
09-29-2008, 12:51 PM
There is a cage with millet sitting outside for them. John is going now with a bird carrier to walk around the neighborhood and call to them to see if they respond.
They can hear the other birds in the house, which is why I think they're sticking around thus far.

Julie

If the dogs had gotten the bird, there would be feathers around. Also, dogs don't usually eat what they catch, as cats do, so if there are no feathers and no bird, the dogs didn't get them.

My U-2 got out one morning (chewed a hole thru the locked doggie door). He stayed in the neighborhood, but would not come back. I stayed out, calling him, until it got dark and I couldn't hear him calling anymore. Went back out early next morning and called him. He had apparently spent the night in a very tall tree, and boy was he glad to see me!

We usually hear only the horror stories, and not the ones where the birds are recovered. I posted earlier about a friend's CAG who was gone two months and then found by a child who was playing outside his house and saw her in a tree. He told his mother there was a parrot in the tree, and she thought he was teasing her. Some neighbors helped her get Zellie down, another neighbor had a guest who had seen a Lost poster for her, and there was a happy ending.

The smazing thing was that Zellie was a hand-fed parrot who had never been outdoors. Despite never having had to find food and water, she must have because she wasn't thin or bedraggled looking. She was very tired, though. She had flown over 15 miles from her home across some very heavy traffic. Lucky bird and lucky owner.

I hope Crystal is as fortunate.

I hope I'm wrong, but I doubt they will find their way home. I think they will show up at somebody else's house. That's why it is so important that you get the word out as widely as you can.

I was surprised when Zellie was found via a poster. I thought surely the newspaper ad would be the key. And she was so far away from her home.

Crystal,

No, I did not fint my teil. He got out through a flukey series of mishaps and was gone. I found him at the edge of the property after about 15 minutes and he called to me but local birds chased him off. He was fully flighted but was a terrible flier always had broken tail feathers from bad landings. He was such a sweet friendly bird that I can only hope that someone found him and has given him a good home. I still find myself unconscienciously looking in the trees for him when I am walking outside. I miss him terribly. I understand the pain you are in. I am hoping for the best outcome. Big hugs to you.

A vet's office that I contacted today said that they got a call about a bird yesterday, but they didn't know what kind of bird or where it was found. They took no info but instead, directed the person to a Raptor Center in Charlotte. I can only hope they had an easier time getting through than I did and SOMEBODY took some info down of some kind. Unfortunately, some people aren't going to go to a lot of trouble. Shame on the vet's office for not taking down the information.

Have you called the animal shelters, local Bird Clubs (our Club frequently gets calls about lost and/or found birds).

I've heard of many birds being reunited with their owners, but never any that flew back after being gone. Gyro never went very far away. And he is a remarkably intelligent bird.

I'm not trying to dash your hopes--just sayng that don't wait around hoping they will come back. I pray, they do, but doubt it very much.

Are you running an ad in the paper, offering a reward? Maybe the paper would do a story on them and losing pet parrots in general. It would be worth a call to them.

A thought. Does the vet's office have caller ID? If so, they should be able to pin the number down by looking at those callers who called at about the same time. They can eliminate their own clients and other known callers.

Sounds like you've pretty much got it covered.

Are there any malls around or big grocery stores that might let you put up a poster? Libraries?

Zellie had flown more than 15 miles away from her home before she was found, so while neighborhood fliers are great, she might not be in the neighborhood any longer.

that's my fear...
Luckily I live on a 3 mile road that has one way in and one way out...so if it's someone within 3 miles they should see the fliers..
the radio station, if they announce, should cover other areas.

Here is the story--The true story is hard to believe but here we go. My daughter took her birds to school for a natural science day, the bottom fell off the cage and her Tiel Tulip a Lutino flew up into the trees and remained out of reach. We stayed and tried to tempt her down and visit the school grounds on the weekend but never saw her again. We put up posters and continued to keep our eyes open. By the end of the school year we had given up. She eventually graduated from that school but her younger brothers attended. We got a new Tiel the following year to help fill that empty spot. After three years I was driving to pick up the boys from school and spotted a poster saying "Found Cockatiel Call this Number" and identify. We talked about it and said to ourselves it could not be possible and almost didn't call. When I called and spoke to the lady we described her and let her know her habits and vocabulary. What a shock she replied I think I have your bird. Tulip had flown down to them a week prior while doing yard work, landed on her shoulder and kissed her cheek riding that shoulder into the house. We went to meet her still not believing it was really her, but it was and she was so happy to see us especially Lauren my daughter. All we can think is that some else must have had her for a few years until she escaped again and ended up coming home. I wish you a happy ending too. I didn't want to post this earlier hoping you would not have to wait so long. By the way we have Hawks and Owls and Crows year round here too.
