I never have...

With the way the economy is looking, I am looking at making sure I have food for my flock. I just placed a large order of food for them and have always tossed and made fresh every day. {seeds and pellets} I am wondering does anyone keep the fresh looking seeds or pellets and put in their dish a second day? I hate to even think this, but if it comes down to it, it's better than them going hungry.
Frankly the economy is scaring me and I want to be prepared for my babies.

What are you all thinking and doing?

I always serve fresh foods in a different bowl than the pellets. That way nothing gets on them but pellet. Sometimes I have to completely dump the bowl, but not usually. I also only give what they will eat for the day that way they will eat it all and I can dump the crumbs and wash the bowl.

I don't mix fresh with dry, they each have a seed dish, fresh foods dish, pellet dish and water dish. I also give fresh clean bowls daily. Some days they eat more of one thing than another and I am only wondering in a worse case sinario should I HAVE to.

The only thing I recycle is nuts in the shell that have been dropped as long as they are clean. I have really had this on my mind as well. I ordered pellets the other day at $45 per 20 lbs. Just a few years ago I got 40 lbs for $45. The seed is not any less expensive. If our birds don't kick the pellets and seed out of their bowls, which is rare, I leave the dry food for the following day. I have noticed that giving my guys less food triggers them to conserve more and play less, but then I worry that they aren't getting their fill. I'm not sure what to do as of yet. Our grocery bills for fruits, veggies, and meats would blow you out of the water, especially in knowing that Gabe eats enough for two adult men.

I just placed an order and Syd's pellets went up $11 since last months catalog as did some of the others as well. YIKES! I too don't want them to be left hungry so I do tend to over feed a bit.

I don't recycle at all. I only have one bird so my expenses are not as great as what some of you have. I give Baby 1/4 cup seed nut mix, 1/8 cup harrisons pellets, 1/8 cup pecans, 1/8 cup pine nuts. During the day I also give her a bell pepper that she eats the seeds out of. I also give her sliced butter squash - heated. Other veggies as she will eat them.

I also do some sprouting but I find she only picks out a few of the sprouts and the rest goes to waste, so it is not economical.

Most of the waste is from her dropping her food to the bottom of the cage - so I can't recycle any of that even if I wanted to.

I serve seeds and fresh foods in different bowls, but that does not stop a dirty beak from being stuck in the seed dish.

I always throw mine out.

I recycle the seed so to speak... what they dont eat goes outside the the wild birds... they love me. Oh and what ever pellets are not eaten also.

I do that too. I even include nuts or parts of nuts that fell into food or poop. There is one squirrel who has found the bounty.

Zoey's new thing is dropping her pellets between the cages so the dog/cat will squeeze in go get them. She then climbs down and tries to bite them. Doesn't usually get the cat, but the bigger dogs are squeezed right up against the cages and I confess I have heard a yelp or two. She seems to quite enjoy this game of "fishing".
Recycling? Well, the dogs get the nutrients of the bird pellets and my little vampire gets her daily dose of blood. Hey, as long as it isn't mine I'm not complaining. :D

Heather -- that is funny. Birds are so smart and devious. Shame on Zoey for picking on the lesser species.

We have a bowl for water, a bowl for pellets, a bowl for seeds and nuts and a bowl for fresh.

We wash each one and refill every day. On Saturday, they all go in the dish washer for a scalding. We have a solar water heater so the hot water is VERY hot and free.
