Michelle, this one is for you.
A few months ago we discovered that two of our perches slide together and perfectly combine to create a mega perch. Because Peggy is in the house most of the day, we allow her to have both perches and instead of being the perch potato that she used to be, she is actually using the space, playing with toys and having a great time. BUT, this new arrangement comes with conditions.
The great thing about this new perch is that we can roll the two perches away from each other whenever we have other birds in the house and this way they can each have their own perch.
Benny BatToo and Peggy Sue have a special relationship. When I take them places, I can perch them both on the handle of our stroller and they will sit together. BUT, these two were not a match made in heaven. They tolerate each other the way siblings would and they are constantly bickering. Whenever BatToo is in the house, I slide the perches apart so each of them can have their own spot.
Peggy Sue becomes an instant nag when she realizes that it's time to spend some quality time with her brother who has just taken up half of her perch. BatToo is pretty polite and he will at first, try to ignore her. She will creep over to the edge of her perch, leaning toward him, wings out, head poofed, and she squeals at him as loudly and obnoxiously as she can. He will ignore this gesture for quite some time until he feels that she is no longer paying close attention. Slowly he will creep over to be close to her and at the last second he will flare his crest and tail, spread his wings and squeal back at her. This scares the willies out of Peggy every time and she quickly retreats back to the other far end of her perch. BatToo laughs histarically while head banging. This is his way of saying "Thank you, thank you, I AM the king!"
This teasing will go on for some time until both birds are brave enough to challenge the other face to face. It is only at this point that they both move as close to the other as possible to engage in the worlds longest staring contest. How they think they are intimidating each other, I really do not know.
When both birds accept defeat and realize that this is silly making, they both agree that the other is equally annoying and proceed to preen themselves enthusiastically for the momma to see what her opinion is. She justs laughs at them both every time, kisses them on the head, and tries to explain that she loves all of her children.
