NEW ORLEANS — Gulf Coast residents began fleeing low-lying areas Saturday as Gustav, packing near 145 mph winds, swelled to a Category 4 hurricane on a path to slam into the U.S. coast somewhere between Texas and the Florida Panhandle around midnight Monday.
The National Hurricane Center called the storm "extremely dangerous." It said the center of Gustav, near the western tip of Cuba, had maximum winds of 145 mph, with gusts even higher. The eye was to pass over the island later Saturday and could strengthen even more as it rolls into the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
