excerpt:

"Surprisingly, some birds such as parrots can teach and learn hundreds or even thousands of different calls, the basic communication skill that makes human language possible. So-called vocal learning is a kind of intelligence not found in any mammal other than people, bats, dolphins, whales, and elephants. Even chimpanzees and other primates closely related to humans are not as vocally sophisticated as birds."

Check out all the diagrams, especially the last one.
"Studies of brain chemicals and neural connections have shown that most of a bird's small brain (notice it shown to scale) consists of a robust "pallium," or higher-processing center. In fact, many birds have more powerful palliums than mammals."

What gets me...is that as bird owners, we KNOW these things...just like the new discovery that birds DO talk in context. How many of us doubted that? Just like now...how many of us are surprised that these birds are smarter than anyone gave them credit for? We KNOW they can process information and actually react and learn from it. We see them do this everyday.
I'm glad though, that people are now forced to sit up and take notice of what bird owners have been saying for years.
Thanks for this Dot...I enjoyed it a LOT! =)

What fun to have our observations confirmed by hard science.:alien:
