Sometimes Andy and I like to pretend that we're still teenagers who can do whatever we please whenever we please. That's how "late night projects" come about after the kids have gone to bed. Obviously we regret this decision at 8:00am the following morning when Gabe wants to get up, and perhaps some day we will finally give up this plight. In the meantime, we will continue to be in denial that we are adults. Here is the little project we came up with last night.

In progress:

Someone donated a 1980's TV dinner cart to us. We thought the malamine surface would be perfect for building a manzanita gym on. Now we have a rolling play gym cart! Hurray.

nice job :) What type of wood did you use?

Most of it is manzanita, though the dowels are likely untreated pine. Home Depot sells those dowels in huge sections and they are very handy. We have made similar gyms in the past for our fosters...but they always go buy-bye when the bird finds it's forever home as they seem to get pretty attached to their gyms.

Here's a picture of one we made for long term foster, Lucky (BFA), though you can't see it very well...

i'm guessing you attached the dowels to the tray with screws through the bottom and up to the dowel? Or is there a better way. I find stuff like that ALL the time when mom and I garage sale in the summer.

Yup, we screwed them in through the bottom. Glue just doesn't hold very well, so I think screwing gyms together makes it the most secure.

Your playstands are lovely, as are those two BFAs that I can see.

Where can you get pieces of manzanita?

Manzanita for bird & reptile perches (http://www.sierrawireandsteel.com/index_manzanita.html) See if this link works-This is one resource available for Manzanita.
