It's all in how you look at your bird. Pics of featherless birds are hard to look at but knowing that you can make them happy will bring a lot of beauty to the table.

Most people tell me that my babies are super ugly, but I just don't see it. And for that matter, who tells a momma that her baby is ugly anyway?

We had babies 3 years in a row but I split my guys up because I just couldn't imagine hand feeding 8 baby tiels this spring. That picture was of our very first clutch and I'm so lucky they lived. I had only a vauge idea of what I was doing and allowed them to over eat. I suppose doing it long enough means losing a baby is bound to happen at some point but I have never lost one while handfeeding. One or two almost always dies in the nestbox if they have more than 5 hatch. Those guys are Freedom, Boomer, and Louie.
Here is Jessie, a cinnamon pied from our group last year.

Anna,
You didn't post a warning about overwhelming cuteness. Not fair.

The newly hatched ones are my favorite. I think you all know that I hand raised my Quaker from the time she was 3 days old. I kept her warm in my shirt pocket. My wife took the day shift feeding her and I took the night shift. That little birdy was always in contact with us.
I remember when she got her first pin feathers... took her first hop... learned to talk before she fledged. She would say... "I'm so cuke" (I'm so cute). And she said gimmie kiss. She developed quite the vocabulary when she was very young. I remember when she began to eat on her own. I remember when I had her at the sink to get her some water and she jumped right in the sink and took her first bath... she was a true water bird. I called her my little green chicken.
I named her Baby... I miss her.

Yes! I don't know whether it's their fragility or just the fact that these little balls of fluff and flesh feather out and become these wonderful beings that so enrich our lives . Looking at them makes me weak in the knees. Talk about starting life as an underdog.
