View Full Version : Fergie is over-preening again - and how stupid am I!
I thought it was hormonal and realized today that I had increased the number of pellets she gets. I used to carefully count out six. Since Hagan sent me some free samples, I thought I would try them. There are no problems with the other birds, but I will cut Fergie off today and see if there is an improvement. Ask me how stupid I feel.

Dot...I have no idea what Fergie's secret is but she always looks beautiful and her Mother worries about it too much. :)

I will. Do you offer Baby pellets? If so, how many?

Some birds do not do well on pellets. Ekkies in general do not do well on them. Vets are now saying that some birds are allergic to the dyes in the pellets. Even if they are natural, some birds do not do well on them. Some birds have a problem with vitamin toxicity. That is why I was so careful about counting them out.
No one really knows what birds eat, but I want to offer them some of everything. That does not guarantee they will eat it. If you notice, I never say, "My birds eat" or "I feed my birds." I say, "I offer...."
Join the Yahoo Group FeedingFeathers and read some of their files. It is good reading.

Dot - I have gone the whole gammet on diet... it drives me nuts with all the advice and different ways different people swear by certain diets.
I now have returned to offering pellets along with the rest of the stuff I give her. Since I returned her to some pellets - she no longer eats her poop. When I had her strictly off pellets - she went for her poop like it was candy. I put her back on pellets and within 4 days she stopped eating her poop and has not returned to it.
Keep in mind - I offer her pellets along with all the other things I give her.
My take is this... we cannot duplicate what they eat in the wild... can't be done... I don't have a steady supply of stump water at hand - nor a steady supply of insects... nor a steady supply of wild field grains from New Guinea or other parts of Indonesia. We do the best we can.
Parrots have survived on this earth for over 65 million years... and that is a very long time. They are oppotunistic homnivours... they will eat anything to survive and thrive. They have done quite well on this earth until we humans got our hands on them.
We just do the best we can for what we have tamed... and sometimes that is not enough!

I had forgotten about the poop eating.
