A few nights ago I decided to introduce our bare eyed cockatoo, Benny, to our young guest, the handsome Bakin Baby (Citron). Benny is an exceptionally passive bird, quiet, shy, and generally unbothered by any bird that is not a macaw (those scary, ADHD macaws). I put Bakin on one end of the sofa and Benny on the other and just let them get to know one another.
At first, both crests shot straight up and they locked themselves into a staring contest. After a while, they finally decided to acknowledge that in fact each of them was NOT the only remaining cockatoo on earth. Bakin, being a bit more outgoing, went and stood on top of a pillow so that he would be the bigger bird. At first Benny consented to being overruled, but not for long. After Bakin hopped down from his throne, King Benny decided it was his turn to rule, hopped up on the pillow and puffed out his chest. Bakin was not so understanding and reacted by trying to reclaim "his" pillow, and of course, my little soft hearted marshmallow fled the scene. This went on for a while though I didn't let anyone get close enough to get friendly, since they obviously seemed to fall into their competative male roles right away, but it was amusing to watch them take turns stroking their own egos. Further proof that there will only ever be one too holding onto the keys of my heart. King Benny!
