I can't imagine not working with birds of all shapes and sizes, but there is always a risk that goes along with handling parrots, and even our sweet little cockatiels & budgies can do some damage when they want to. Sometimes I am guilty of being less cautious with my own flock - as opposed to a bird I hardly know - because I believe that I know them through and through and therefore think I can handle whatever they can dish out. Every once in a while someone catches me off gaurd and it reminds me that after all, these are parrots, wild animals that cannot be domesticated.

Marsy was riding around on my husbands shoulder this morning (her favorite person), lept over onto my shoulder when I got near and started making silly noises. So instead of pulling her off my shoulder, as I am usually inclined to do, I decided to play along and made silly noises back. I bent down to set something on the floor and Marsy nailed me in the face...4 times. Congratulations Anna, you are the proud parront to a very irritated lory! HaHa.

Hi, what species of Lory ? Certainly hope you heal quickly, they can do amazing amounts of damage with their beaks, pierce skin like a grape. But still they can be wonderfl pets and aviary birds.

Don,
We have 2 red lories and they are wonderful, amusing, talkative and beautiful. I have to say, though, that they are the most nippy/easily excitable out of our whole flock, but a little understanding and caution goes a long way with them. Though as you can obviously see, to err is human. A lot of people that I have talked with say that they would rather get a bite from one of the larger birds - like a macaw. I guess I just don't understand that logic. I would rather get bit by one of the smaller ones any day. They still hurt and seem to bleed more, but mine heal faster. The big guys will leave you with a bruise that never seems to want to go away! Either way, I should probably be extra cautious right now as i'm on a good dose of blood thinners.

Hi, I've raised a few Reds over the years - really nice birds !! But Lories do have a blade for a beak !!! I do think my favorite Lory is the Duyvenbodes, or any of that genus. But the Reds and the Blackcapped are in there too :)

The Lories are always glad to see you, some of the others just always hide in their boxes when they hear you coming, even if it's feeding time - Lories are very special !!

Hope your bites heal quickly.

Linus bit me in the face twice shortly after I got him - once on each side of the nose. He really meant business with one of the bites. I still have the scars. Foolishly, I still have him close to my face often. I can't help it, it's just how we snuggle. He hasn't bitten me in a long time, but maybe that just means it's overdue.

What a nasty little booger he is being!

So sorry that you "got hit", but at least they look like they will heal quickly!

Ouch... that hurts just looking at it  I think I jinxed myself reading this post yesterday. I thought "You know, its been awhile since Ive been bit." Sure enough, I got tagged. Lancelot (E2) nipped my thumb and barely broke the skin. I didnt think it was that bad but this morning.... well, it hurts! LOL. Gotta love these guys, bites and all :D

So sorry about that face bite. I got one of those recently from my Scarlet. They are not fun.

Gee, I know to read body language. Why do I sometimes ignore it?

I'm guilty of trusting Chicken a bit too much as well...
I know better, all of you and personal experience tells me that I shouldn't, but I just get SO comfortable with him. I've had several bites and near misses because of it. So Anna dear, I know how you feel!

Hope you heal up quickly!

Anna -

The bites that did the most damage to me were in the face and were from my beloved U2, but the ones that hurt the most, I got from parakeets and a Quaker. I think it's because the little birds pinch but the big ones usually grab a hunk of skin/flesh, which somehow doesn't hurt as much.

Of the three I have at home now (Eleanora, CAG and LSC, its the little LSC whose bites hurt the most. Fortunately, she doesn't do it very often, and like Don said, if I paid more attention to her body language, I wouldn't get bitten as much.

Make that "Dot,"--not "Don." Don must be thinking about me!

Ouch! The little guys sure hurt too.
I'm not sure which bird I'd reather take a bite from. But I can say Stella would be my last choice. I can still see where she got me a few months ago.

I remember when she nailed you! I honestly thought about you when Mars bit me and wondered how you were doing. That was a nasty bite.
