I found this add with pictures of a CAG who plucks and the feathers come back red/pink.

Seemed interesting, not something I've ever seen/heard of, so thought I'd ask.

Here an interesting article related to plucking etc. I have seen a color change due to injury but I have no idea unless it is a natural occurring sport called mosaic coloration. http://www.newyorkbirds.net/featherdestructivebehavior.html

Ashley,
The red feathers are called a "red factor" african grey. If you do a search for it on the internet you will find a lot of info on it.
Alex had one red feather on his neck, it was his trademark...
Are you thinking of trying to adopt this grey? Let me know if you want more info I have a 6 y/o female....

Thanks Julie! I thought that was really interesting. Are there any other birds prone to getting different colored feathers if plucked?
I found that while I was trolling for Bonnie. Thankfully my MBS is at a fairly low level. :smiles:

I know that with Greys and Tiels they will loose a good amount of coloring after thier first big molt.
I have heard of Greys coming in with the red factor after a pluck, but do not believe it is all that common.
Bonnie,
My grey is by far more stubborn than my too..... Keep that in mind... I do have a male too and a female grey. He is terrified of her, and she is constantly trying to get his attention.... We do not let them get close, but they do "fly by's" to make sure the other is paying attention.... LOL

Thanks Julie! Ashley looks for me and links me to birds she thinks I'll be interested in. I've got a bad case of MBS. I won't be jumping into anything, but at the same time, I like to keep my eyes open.

this posting was flagged for removal...I wonder if they found a home for the little guy? That sounds interesting...and something that would be fun to see.

Crystal, you might try clicking it again. Dallas CL has some serious issues with just about every post being flagged for removal. I looked this morning and the add I linked to was back after having been removed before Bonnie could even send the person an email.
Three adds for bigger, expensive birds were up and gone within 30 minutes of being posted yesterday, one being the scam I replied to about the Hyancinth and a B&G Macaw (was for sure a scam) and Catalina Macaw.
I think they've been flagging any posts without a re-homing fee (because they most likely are a scam) and any that they feel have an outrageous fee listed. I figure once flagged, a post is removed, then reviewed by CL staff, and reposted if it is deemed okay.
The post about the Grey was probably flagged for the $300 re-homing fee.

Just a quick comment to say that a bird who changes coloring like this grey can sometimes have organ damage and should be checked by an avian vet.

My Sam has a few red factor feathers on the back of his neck and one on his chest. Sam has never been a plucker. The red feathers didn't show up for a few years then came in with a molt. They were a lighter red color at first and now they are the red like his tail.
Had a cat, black, that lost some fur. The fur grew back and was white. Have had something similar with a dog. Don't know why this occurs.
