I was wondering if it is hard to handle a male and a female bird in one home. I'm sure there are a few of you that can answer this for me. Do they try to mate if they are of different breeds? Is the male more agressive when a female is introduced?

But since you are going to be coy... I will share with you what I know.

Cockatoos are known for their mate agression... especially the larger Toos such as Umbies and Moluccans. There is no other species that can compare to the violence that a male Too can bring about to its mate.

Now that being said... there are many who have larger Toos and other species in their homes without problems. It all depends.

There was an ad on craigslist about a RFM. It is female. I have been seriously considering the possibilities.

Most my birds are rehomed and Buchee (M2) was the last one added to the Flock. So I have Zoey-female U2 and Buchee -Male M2. Yes the dynamic have changed. The cockatoos want to be together all the time now. Zoey used to want to cuddle with us before bed. No interest at all now. She now wants to play, preen and cuddle with Buchee. Buchee is still willing to be petted, but would rather play with his girlfriend. YES he has become more agressive around her and I must watch their playing. He has a couple times become too excited that has tried to bite Zoey's toes. So again I watch them carefully. Yes they try to mate lately everyday on top of his cage. I stop them each time. I can tell it is happening usually because I hear Zoey panting. So if I had to do it over again, I would not have rehomed a male M2. A female M2 would have been better.

Just reread your post to make sure I had answered all your questions. Both Zoey and Buchee are very sweet when not around the other. Buchee can seem to pay attention to me more when they are not together than Zoey. When they are seperated each night after having some time together, they both scream for a while. If Zoey is taken out of the room, Buchee screams until she comes back. I hope I have answered your questions. At least this is my situation.

I have different kinds and both male and females and the only ones that want to be together are the tiels. The others could care less if the others existed.

I guess I was sleeping on this one:haha:
I have males & females, all my birds exhist in the same area, but don't really play together. The 2 Lovies are a pair, the 2 conures play together sometimes, 2 Zons talk to each other, and Stella & Cassie get along but don't really try to play together much.
I think it depends on the individual birds themselves as to how they play and get along much like kids & people.

my 3 cents {a bit late so I added interest}

Hey...I have seen first hand the magic you have with small birds! ::Bracing to be hit multiple times with a blunt object:::

you know I always have my eyes out for your perfect bird miss Bonnie.

And to answer your question, I am of the opinion that *usually* different species do not seem to have as many problems when mixing genders. Mixing cockatoos can be a problem and mixing some of the smaller birds together could be a problem...but worrying over a male cockatoo and female macaw does not seem like it holds much weight in my book unless they are housed in the same cage together. Probably not a wise idea anyhow, Re: Old World VS New World.
