Some of you might be wondering about Sunshine and what ended up happening with his placement. We were expecting Evelyn to be coming out late last week to come meet Sunshine, but things do not always go as planned. The first time Evelyn was supposed to come out she had several emergency situations occur and we ended up agreeing to postpone the trip. Several days before she was supposed to come out this time, Evelyn notified me that her flight had been canceled. She had started to feel that maybe God was trying to tell her that she was not meant to have Sunshine. After some thought and a lot of heartache, Evelyn decided to give up Sunshine.
For those who don't know, there was another family who was interested in Sunshine who are local and Sunshine had just fallen head over heals in love with them. I called them to let them know that they could come get "their" bird and they were overjoyed. After Sunshine went, I realized just how much he jabbered throughout the day as it was sooo quiet. His level of understanding really scared me when we first brought him into our home but now that I had the oppertunity to get used to a bird who is that smart, I really miss it, and him!
His new family called me early the day after they took him home to tell me that they had opened up Sunshine's cage door in the morning to give him some out time and before they realized it, Sunshine had climbed over onto their kitchen counter and ate one-half of a dozon bananas. there were banana's on the counter, the walls, the floor, his cage, himself and who knows where else. When they put him back in his cage after cleaning him up he peered through the bars at them asking "Apple?" They had to politely explain that they thought he had had enough sugar for one day.
Before it was time for Sunshine to go I decided to introduce him to his new flockmate, Gandolf the TAG whom he had been calling across the house to for the past 3 weeks (as we were petsitting for sunshines new owner while they were out of town.) I'm not sure that Sunshine had ever seen another grey before as he was quite upset that there was another creature in the room that looked like him. He leaned away from Gandolf, shuttered his wings and said "Scary!" Awww, poor guy. I guess it's good that they will not be kept in the same room. Gandolf was totally thrilled to see another grey and gave Sunshine an excited head bob.
Sunshine seems to be adjusting well in his new home, though I think his new owner will need a little bit of time to get used to his level of intelligence as she is constantly calling me up to tell me all of the wild things he has been saying. My typical response has been: "Mmm-hmm...that sounds like Sunshine."
Evelyn, I just want you to know that I think you would have been a great home for this bird and I'm sorry that things kept getting in the way of that chance. I think that it is extremely honorable that you decided to follow your heart regarding this matter, even though you really wanted Sunshine for yourself. Please let me know if there is anything I can do that might help ease the heartache you must be feeling over not getting to spend your life with him.
Sunshine's new owner is thinking about starting a blog with all of the things that he says and does on it, and if this happens, i'll let everyone know so that you can keep up to date on our very smart little CAG.
