Animal Intelligence Resists Definition
"Whales and dolphins appear to share similar abilities. And like some birds, dolphins appear to name themselves."
(I don't think I have anything about birds naming themselves.)

Wonderful stuff It really helps us explain our fascination to other non bird crazed humans. Words can be good.

Loved the articles, Dot. Naming oneself is an act of self-awareness. This topic really fascinates me.

I was so shocked the first time my Scarlet used the pronoun "I." I just wasn't expecting it. And she wasn't just mimicking because she said, "I go pooh pooh." I had told her where she was (and had just pooped) was not a designated pooh pooh place.

Very interesting articles, thank you for sharing. Rocky the CAG has learned to say his name when he wants something. He will say "Rocky wants a drink, or Rocky wants good crackers". Non-Bird people just don't understand the intelligence of these beautiful creatures.

He has learned his name, as have some of mine. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think they mean that bird actually gives himself a name. Does that make sense?

That is how I read it - the birds give themselves names.
At the pet center where I got Baby there was a beautiful B&G who named himself. A customer asked him what his name was and he said - Howard!
From then on he was called Howard.
He was barely weaned at the time... and he went to a good home.
