Bondi already knew the regular retrieve (http://youtube.com/watch?v=GKkR1k5PG0o), but here's a little twist on it!

Very cute... Mine prefer me to fetch also...
Curious and ignorant. I thought the clicker was a bridge that you used in training the bird and that it came to represent the nut. Why are you using both the clicker and the nut?

Is this possible to teach a green cheek? Have you worked with green cheek conures at all? He's very intelligent...of course I'm biased! =)

Jamie,
Has Linus ever done this for you? Because he looks at me like Get it yourself!

We didn't use a clicker in this video. I did use it in the "normal retrieve" video because a clicker is an event marker. It signifies the exact moment when the bird does the correct behavior. The nut (or in our case, sunflower seed) is the reward for performing that behavior.

Patty,
Linus performs the retrieve for Dave in the first video of Taming, Training & Tricks! The one where he is on the cover (http://flickr.com/photos/davewomach/2305218228/in/set-72157604024209422/).
Crystal,
It's definitely possible to teach a green cheek. I fell in love with conures when I was in Moab. Chris and Susan had an entire flock (http://flickr.com/photos/davewomach/2422834419/) of them! It was pretty fun. Theirs were sun conures, though. I'm not sure if a green cheek was mixed in the bunch or not... there were so many birds there.
I've never personally worked with a green cheek one-on-one but I'd love to. I love working with all birds (except white cockatoos! But hopefully that will change).
You have to get your bird comfortable (http://flickr.com/photos/davewomach/2421854333/) going on its back (http://jamiesparrothelp.wordpress.com/2008/04/18/earning-trust-for-behaviors-bird-on-back/), first. Bondi used to hate her back being touched but now she hangs upside down (http://flickr.com/photos/davewomach/2327772855/) and lets us cradle her like a baby all the time.

Don't tease me! I'll have you over training my green cheek! Just teasing...but in all seriousness, I do need to work on training him, I think he would respond rather well. Thanks for the tips!

Aww, hehe, I'd love to help you work with your bird in all honesty. It's what I love doing... so if you're ever in Florida with your bird... I'm your gal! :)
The first behavior I always teach my birds is target training (http://jamiesparrothelp.wordpress.com/2008/03/27/target-training/). It can help so much with learning other tricks, behaviors, etc. And you can clicker condition all at once. It gets the bird used to learning which is essential in being able to teach other things.
We didn't use a clicker in this video. I did use it in the "normal retrieve" video because a clicker is an event marker. It signifies the exact moment when the bird does the correct behavior. The nut (or in our case, sunflower seed) is the reward for performing that behavior.
Thanks. Now I know. If only I could remember. :haha:
