View Full Version : Does your bird talk?
Talking is just something extra but I thought it would be fun to see whose bird talks. Maybe you could also post the favorite or cutest thing your bird has said. I tried to set it up so that you could vote in more than one category if you have more than one bird. It let me do that. Hurray!
Doesn't talk.
Says a few words.
Talks a lot.
Doesn't have an off button.
I put Tommie down as "Doesn't talk." Technically, she has said fifteen words in eighteen years, but compared to the others, she doesn't talk. She has to be if full Amazon overload to say "Hi" or else be trying to earn a pine nut. :)

Stewy talks in typical green cheek fashion...it's a little difficult to understand him unless you're his mommy...
he says a few phrases that I understand all the time, and some that I never understand...
once in a while he starts jabbering, and I can't understand anything except a word here and there to know he's saying SOMETHING...
tee hee
the phrases that I CAN understand are:
step up
quit it
gimme kiss
poop (meaning he's getting ready to, so hold him over the can or he's pooping on you)
thank you (only when he gets his favorite...corn)
Stewy Stewy...

Sorry. I tried. Thanks for taking the time to type all of that out. Now I dont' feel nearly so bad about my RFM shouting her guts out because she is in the incarceration chamber.
I wonder what newbees think when they read about the incarceration chamber and it is not in a thread about aliens and they have not yet read one of Diane's delightful creations.

My favorite story of talking was with Partee, my scarlet macaw. We played a game where I would catch her tail. She would squeall in delight. It was a great game. I would tell her I was going to get her sugarbutt. The minute I would say that she would posture, show me her tail and as I went to get it she would quickly turn so I couldn't get it and she would stare me down. She would then turn her tail towards me to play the game again.
We were at a store and I was socializing her. she just started learning to talk and was good at saying hello. Well, she gathered quite an audience and in her excitement blurted out "HI SUGARBUTT" With the laugh she got from all the people there was no stopping what she had to say from then on.
And that's my talking story

I was being sarcastic too. I had hoped I had made that clear. Oh, well. Computers.
The RFM has a high pitched screech that can bother anyone. I have learned to ignore it. She is loud, but when she first came here and started that "loud" screech, I am sorry to say that I laughed at her. I told her, "Just wait until your sister the Scarlet shouts." The first time Fergie (Scarlet) let go with a loud shriek, and it was not even the loud macaw warning yell, poor Blusher (RFM) took to the air and had the most shocked look on her face. It was really funny, except that she couldn't fly and had to flutter until she hit something.
The YNA is loud when she is in overload, but generally she is quiet. Playtime means Amazon overload.

I put Chicken down as 'says a few words'. Chicken mainly says things when he wants out of the cage or knows he is in trouble. He will occasionally tell me he loves me, pretty bird and the other night he told my friend he was sorry. Oh and he laughs A LOT! When we're watching TV or a movie and we or the people on TV laugh, Chicken does too. He also babbles a lot when he is excited.

Zoey just started talking in December (07) (and I got her in Oct.) since then she has learned about 2 words a month. I put down "says a few words" but I have high hopes (proud mother syndrome- but even if she "rode the short bus" I would be a proud mother lol!) She says:
ZoeyBird
"Ribbit"
Peek-a-boo
Uh-Oh
Oh-No
Hi
somewhat manical laughter (I think from watching nature shows- its a mix between human laughter and I believe a chimp)
We are working (get it sometimes) on Prettybird and I love you

By talking do you mean actual words?? If incessant yammering counts I need to change my vote. No one can usually get a 'word' in edgewise.

Paulie and Peanut the Sengals that just came to live with us talk, a lot of it I am still figuring out, Paulie's favorite speech is "I have issues" and believe me...he does!! Peanut doesn't say as much as Paulie. Miss Jacque the Quaker only says about 3 or 4 words and phrases, mainly step up because she wants to be with me. Angel the quaker loves to talk (he's the one who calls me buttcrack when mad at me) loves to call the dogs and then tell them to go lay down, he puts a lot of words together himsef and make phrases. Rocky the CAG....motormouth....if I am on the phone especially. His new thing is we taught him to say "here kitty, kitty, kitty...where's the kitty" He has taken it to another step, his cage is in front of the living room window.....he will bang on the window and yell "where's the kitty" and keep banging until one of the cats jumps up there. Then while they are frantically trying to get at him through the window he is laughing and saying "here kitty, kitty, kitty" and banging on the window. He is a trip!!
Paulie's favorite speech is "I have issues"
That is a hoot!

My vote was "says a few words" and it was mainly for Bondi and Cash (galah and military macaw). My favorite thing that Bondi says is "Hey Cutie!"

Betty Boop - LSC female
Says a few words: Pretty bird; pretty Betty; Red Dog.
Tamar - CAG female
Has said about 40 words (I keep a list). However, she doesn't use all of them all the time. She doesn't have an off-button in the mornings when we wake her up.
Plato - E2 male
Talks a lot. Some words are clear as a bell; others we understand but others may not; and some of it is gibberish. He probably knows about 15 words. He knows what "BYe-bye" means and says it when we are headed out the door. He calls my husband by saying "Pa-pa." He calls the dog. He says "Hello" back if you say it to him.
Gyro - U2
When he is with me, he talks a lot; and he knows what he is saying. When he is with my friend Lois he doesn't talk so much, but then he is an aviary with 17 other birds. He puts words together that we don't use together. For example, he was in his cage for two days without getting out. I refer to being confined to his cage as being in jail. He said several times, "Gyro is a jailbird." I know I've told this before. He chewed a window frame, pushed out the pane and flew up to the roof of the house. It was raining hard. My friend put a ladder up against the house; and as she was climbing up to get him, he was climbing down to her, saying, "Poor Gyro, poor Gyro." His escaping scared the bejesus out of both of us. Needless to say, the window frames were replaced immediately. When he was at my office, he would tell people, "Hello," or "Hi" when they came in, and "Bye-bye" when they left. If it was a woman, he would do the wolf whistle.

I voted with my blue front in mind. He doesn't have an off button. LOL My yellow naped is starting to catch up to him too and now it is a competition. I have others who say a few and some who say none.
