someone has been posting for the last few months about "baby" a little SI Eclectus who needs a new home. all I could think is "omg.. this birdy is going to go to someone who has no idea what to do with it" so I called, and I asked them what the adoption fee is 800$ with the cage. I don't want another bird. I just want to make sure shes gonna go to a good home. I suppose anyone who would pay 800$ would have to be a half-decent person and hopefully understand the little beauty. I despise craigslist.. theirs so many animals in the world who need a home  and I all I wish I could do is provide a loving home for them all! When I was a kid with all the land it was acceptable! We could have 12/15 dogs running around as a pack and then into the kennels at night.. - sigh - At least I know all of us are animal nuts wanting to save the world lol :)

It's very sad but there are so many people out there who sell their unwanted birds for very high prices. In my opinion, most of them want to be re-embursed for their "mistake." Most people who have a lot of experience with birds will not pay $800 for an older bird when they can get a chick at the same price, unless they are trying to pay it's bail and get it out of a bad situation. Realistically, I don't know many "rescuers" with that kind of money floating around. Sadly, these birds end up being sold to someone who has no concept of bird companionship or of what a reasonable cost should be. Many of the birds hav already developed bad habits and these new owners are in way over their heads. The bird will get passed around and around. Nothing makes me more angry than when I come accross someone who expects me to re-emburse them for their "mistake." Those who really care about their birds and have to give them up make the effort to find someone to help them, and their only request is that their baby finds a good home.

I tend to agree with that Anna. I know first off I could NEVER get rid of my birdies! That's why i live in a little apartment instead of with my parent at no cost! she said "get rid of some birdies!" I said no ma'am! If I ever did have to rehome my birdies, there would be no fee. I think I'll pray for ths birdie.

I think asking an adoption fee for birds that need to be rehomed is smart because it helps people to feel more responsible for their new bird. There have been times when I have adopted a bird to someone without an adoption fee, but only ever to people I knew really well, people who had already shown great responsibility for what they already had. Even still, there are people out there who would rather go through a rescue to get a bird for "cheap" instead of buying a baby or hunting through the paper for over priced birds. I still have to be very careful when adopting to make sure the potential adopter is not just looking for an inexpensive exotic pet. Just my two cents.

Just because someone tacks a adoption fee onto a bird doesn't necessary guaratee that the bird will go to a responsible or good home.A lot of people who look for birds don't realize
what they are up against the noise, the mess the damage they can cause to your home. Some think it's cute look we have a talking parrot we can walk around and perch on our shoulder until they do what parrots do best.Bite, scream and attack the ones it loves then the person who has this bird wants to rehome it for the price they paid for it.Eclectus require a special diet. Because of their long digestive tract and should not be fed pellets. But a lot of people don't realize this when they buy these parrots they think they are so beautiful until they realize you must cook for them and all organic lots of fruit and vegetables or you will have toe tapping, wing flapping or even feather plucking or barbering if fed the wrong foods. And not all Avian Vets are qualified to care for them.I feel bad for these parrots as I am owned by 4 of them 1 which is a rehomed but all are loved dearly. And then there is the hormonal stage which I am going through with 3 of my females.

To top it off I just saw a Ducorps Too on Craigs list today, thought they were too rare to end up there, wrong again. Referring back to Anna's post about the people who did not return a bird that did not work out for them & they resold/rehomed instead. I think part of the motivation to not return the bird is having to admit they made a judgmental error or failed as bird owners. That is very difficult for some people to face. :guilt:
