I stopped at Lowes on the way home from Anna's. Bought a Hunter Air Purifier. I don't know if it's my imagination or if my allergies really were better when I woke up this morning... I really like it. Worth the money in my opinion.

Not your imagination, they really do make a difference. That is how I survive with the number of birds I have.

I went a bit more expensive with mine. My first was an austin air jr which has now been running continously for 9 years and has performed well. I did add two larger ones as the flock grew and those are the pet air. The pet one is larger and more air exchange. It really help withe dust in the house.

That's the one I've been looking at to replace my current one. What's the deal with 'replacement filter'? Are they expensive and how long do they last?

Replacement filters are a bit expensive $125 or a little more. Replace every 3 to 5 years. The prefilter (black wrap) is much less expensive and I replace that each year or two. Vacuuming a few times a week keeps it in shape. I have owned honeywell and a few others. Over time this one was cheaper and provided better air cleaning IMHO. there is such low maintenance. Lasting as long as it has without any mechanical failure is a big plus in my book. The casing is made of metal and the birds don't mess with it (no plastic to pick at) and with a lot of birds that is a biggie.
